In Ireland, 1951, the young June Goulding took up a position as midwife in a home for unmarried mothers run by the Sacred Heart nuns. What she witnessed there was to haunt her for the next fifty years. It was a place of secrets, lies and cruelty. A place where women picked grass by hand and tarred roads whilst heavily pregnant. Where they were denied any contact with the outside world; denied basic medical treatment and abused for their 'sins'; where, after the birth, they were forced into hard labour in the convent for three years. But worst of all was that the young women were expected to raise their babies during these three years so that they could then be sold—given up for adoption in exchange for a donation to the nuns. Shocked by the nuns' inhumane treatment of the frightened young women, June risked her job to bring some light into their dark lives. June's memoir tells the story of twelve women's experiences in this home and of the hardships they endured, but also the kindness she offered them, and the hope she was able to bring.

Appalling
By Gimme The Scoop
This is a true story that happened back in the 50's in Ireland. June Goulding became a nurse at a home for unwed mothers run by nuns. She thought the position was an answer to her prayers after working so many hours at another job and never getting to spend time with her fiance but she was soon to find out the horrors that she would witness there. She shares her experiences in great detail with us thru The Light In The Window.
Let me first say that I dont read alot of Non-fiction but I thumbed thru this book that has been sitting on my bookshelf for some time now and could not put it down. I was utterly horrified at the living and medical conditons these girls some as young as 15 had to endure. They were offered no pain medicine at delivery nor given any stitches after delivery but instead asked if the pain they had just endured worth the five minutes of pleasure it had given them! It made me angry. It made me sad. There were parts that even almost made me shed tears. These girls were virtual prisoners for 3 years to the home to "pay for their sin". They were made to raise and nurture their babies for this 3 years and then have to hand them over to adoptive parents! I just felt like that was so cold because most adoptions the kids are taken at birth but these women had 3 whole years they had to help raise there kids before the home would put them up for adoption.

Sad and Angry
By catherine
June Goulding was the midwife who deliverd many babies in the gestapo-style home run by nuns in Ireland.
June was only 22 when she had this job.She was the midwife there for approximately two years. She left when she married a dentist and she had seven children of her own. But even after becoming a mother herself, seven times, she did not tell anyone about this horrendous cruelty in Ireland by the Catholic Church. She took approximately 46 years to tell what had been going on in the Home. Although June, rightfully, blames the Sister (the nun in charge of the hospital part of the Home) for the cruelty, she never once writes one word against the Catholic Church and the church condoning this terrible cruelty against those young women. That is the thing that struck me all through the story: at the beginning I was sympathetic to June's plight because she was too young to be exposed to this evil, but at the end I was angry with June Goulding as well as the Sister, the priest, the evil doctor and the Catholic Church, and the Government of Ireland because, when she was free and married and secure, she did not tell what was happening to those young women.
The cruelty was unforgiveable - but to make the young women breast-feed and care for the babies in the home until they were three years old, and then take the babies away from their mothers, was evil.
June and her husband were professionals in the medical profession but they did nothing to disclose what was going on in the Home.
If you have high blood pressure you had better not read this book!
