Invaluable resource

As a senior resident in anesthesia I feel very comfortable with airway management. However, there are cases that I have not either had previous exposure to or only limited experience in managing. From time to time one of these special airway cases presents and as any responsible provider would do, I look up management in one of the top texts: Barash, Miller, M&M, Jaffe etc. The information in these texts is not as clinically focused as I would like.
With master techniques the chapters are short, to the point, and very clinically focused. Still, the key value of the text is that it offers narrated videos of the technique being described in the chapter text. The video of the procedure walks you through step-by-step and the narrator highlights the key points and major pitfalls to look for.
The text can be downloaded to an iPhone or tablet, so you can review the video/text anytime/anywhere. I have occasionally found myself with an “add-on” case with a difficult airway, or using a piece of equipment that I am minimally familiar with. I can open the video and review a technique in several minutes.
No matter how many cases you have done it is almost impossible to see all the cases presented in this text. With Master techniques I feel better prepared for difficult airways, and much more familiar with the airway equipment and how it is correctly handled. For beginners (and everyone else) who have had minimal to no experience with some of these airways and equipment I find the text invaluable. With the ability to run through the case the night before with this text, you are able to learn so much more during the actual case and are better prepared predict and handle an emergency. I wish this text were available when I began residency.
