I didn't just read it, I devoured it.

A excellent collection of essays. Any skeptic or non believer can find words of wisdom in this book. I only wish that some of my religious friends and family would read this. One author who stood out was Casper Rigsby. In the last essay he says that we have to speak out and he's right. Yes, people are allowed to believe whatever they want. But by the same token, we are allowed to criticize and not only does this book do that, but it does so in a thorough and logical manner. It breaks issues down into sections and you get many points of view on certain subjects. Which is great because if you don't quite agree with one, then you get another point of view soon after. This is the kind of book that can be easily read in your spare time, leaving you with the option of putting it down, even frequently if needs be (great if you have a busy schedule!).

I was interested in learning more about the thoughts of agnostics and atheists and this book provided it. Naturally, some of the essays were better than others, but that is to be expected. Overall, the book met my expectations.

Lynch blends biography, filmography, spiritual quotes and his philosophical perspective on the life-changing capabilities of transcendental meditation, all within two and a half hours. Having practiced meditation for three decades, director Lynch discusses how it has influenced his life and helped him to concentrate his energy. Listeners may catch glimpses of creativity and consciousness, but Lynch's rants lack cohesion and substance. Within the audiobook's short chapters, Lynch barely broaches a topic before moving onto the next, leaving listeners to question his emphasis to go "deep." The most interesting aspects arise out of his anecdotes and comments about his films, like Eraserhead and Blue Velvet. His dry rattling voice hints at the passion behind his statements, but more often comes across as insistent and almost whiny. He reminds listeners that authors do not always make the best voices for their books. However, on the sound production end, the lightly blowing wind for the quotes from the Upanishads and Sutras adds mystical air to their reading. It's unfortunate that neither his words nor his voice live up to that standard.

It is just o.k., Lynch's thoughts on life, meditation, etc., in small easy to read doses.

I read some of the reviews and was curious about David Lynch's connection with meditation and his creativity. I'll admit I have only seen one Lynch product (Blue Velvet) which I found to be an excellent though bizarre film. The book kind of goes through his thoughts on life, meditation, making films and creative methods. It is a short read and feels like reading someone's thoughts that are jotted down in no particular order. I guess I was looking for a book that would really getting into the hows and whys of Mr. Lynch's creative process and meditation method vs. short thoughts, feelings and opinions. I guess if you are a huge fan of Mr. Lynch this book would give you bits and pieces of his thought process. Overall, I thought the book was just o.k.

An evening with David Lynch

I should start off my review by saying that I enjoyed this book and would recommend it highly. I purchased this book partially on whim after hearing verry little about it. I've always been fascinated by art and have been a musican since I was verry young. Recently I've been creativity frustrated and have been branching out into various adventures from exploring more interesting film to starting a modest meditation practice.

I recived my copy of the book after getting off work and finished it verry quickly. It's a verry easy read, its only 180 pages and around 80 something chapters. Each of the chapters explore various topics from film makers David Lynch admires to his meditation practice. This book feels like sitting down with David Lynch for an evening and just enjoying his unique perspective of the world. I treasure this book and it has inspired me.

Meditation, Creativity, and Film

This book has a lot of interesting information in it. David Lynch talks about his experience with Transcendental Meditation and its positive effects on him. He also talks about his strategies for living a life as an artist. And there are several different pages about the movies he's made, the actors in them, and his thoughts on film in general.

His biggest points are the importance of healthy living, the importance of meditation, and being your natural self. His advice for creativity, I thought, was pretty helpful for just about any artistic medium.

The book is pretty short. It doesn't go super in depth into any one topic. Mr. Lynch spends about a page or two on each idea. It's really interesting to hear everything in his direct voice, but some more detail would have been nice.

I loved how positive David Lynch seemed in the whole book. About the biggest thing I took from the book was his advice on being healthy yourself. He says, for an artist, you have to understand things like depression to create conflict in a story. But, if you, yourself, are depressed, it will be very hard to create. So he suggests different ways throughout the book to keep yourself healthy and still make art.

This was a great way to see into David Lynch's world through his own words. There's lots of great words, advice, and information, but it is very brief. But, if you're interested in David Lynch and his approach to life strategy, it's a great book.

Helpful thoughts on dealing with the stresses of life

What is interesting is about this book is that is not one to be read from cover to cover. It is more a reference and source of inspiration in dealing with life's events. At the end of each chapter, there is an excellent prayer to our Father. The basis of this book demonstrates how faith in our Father and His son, Jesus, and the love they have given us strengthens us in dealing with daily situations. It is interesting to note that this book was apparently first published in 1944 and 55 years later the advice and counsel contained in each chapter is relevant today as it was then. This is the type of book that should be carried and kept on hand to help you through trying times. If used properly, the pages will become "dog eared" through frequent use. Great book for all ages.

Colorful Book and Great Read

Colorful Book and Great Read. The author tells an interesting story about an interesting business person, Sam Zell. I have seen Mr. Zell on CNBC many times and found him very honest and straightforward; which are characteristics you do not often see with commentators on television. Agree or disagree with Mr. Zell, he is a fascinating business man and the author digs deeper into the story of his success. The author writes a frank and in some instants not so flattering account of Mr. Zell, but a great read.

Biography That Misses the Man

Sam Zell is a memorable character who regularly spews out interesting quotes for reporters. Zell was able to create a massive business domain based on real estate before he took the fateful step of entering the media business by acquiring the Tribune Corporation.

However, this book misses the mark. While author Ben Johnson gets the details of the deals down pat, he fails to create a compelling portrait of the man himself. There is but little in this book about the private Zell, his thoughts or about his family. Johnson also fails to provide an examination of Zell's dealings and the way that he operates his businesses. Worse of all, Johnson's handling of the Tribune fiasco is poor and one wonders why he could not wait until its concluded before undertaking this book.

In sum, this book works both as a compendium of Zell's real estate transactions and as a treasury of Zell's most famous quotations. However, if you want to get past the gloss and into the substance, you have to wait for a future biographer to come along.

Poorly written, not worth the time to read

I read a significant amount about Sam Zell's history and his businesses, and I must say that this book misses the mark in nearly every category about Zell. Ben Johnson's writing style reminds me of a middle school student - short, descriptive sentences that really don't say anything at all. The book is filled with anecdotes and quotes that are really just fillers of space that don't provide any unique insights into Sam Zell's business philosophies. The most interesting part of the book is the first 60 pages - before the author begins the boring and relentless description of the Tribune acquisition. I've heard Zell speak multiple times, and I'm surprised he allowed this thing to get published, truly Zell should know garbage when he sees it.

'I will scrub up really well, Each night before bed.'

San Diego, California Author Leela Hope studied English Literature at Berkeley, earning a degree in 1989. Her writing covers a span of several genres, but she always returns to her first love, children's fiction. And it is there that her star shines brightest. Always finding something unique on which to base her stories, she makes each tale a learning experience for children as well as offering some pointers for parenting!

Leela sets the tone of her story on the very first well illustrated page of Lee and his mother at bath time an din her inimitable rhyme she begins ‘At bath time, Lee fought, And got downright mean, As his mother had said, “You need to be clean.”

Lee goes to bed one evening not having washed his left ear after his mother had given up trying to teach him hygiene. He awakens with a large left ear – and it just kept getting larger! His mother rushes him o the doctor who begins to scrub the large ear an even calls in the town folk to clean Lee’s dirty large left ear – of course the result of cleaning is a return to a normal ear.

Great illustrations, rhyming poetry and a fine lesson about hygiene make this one of Leela Hope’s best! Grady Harp, October 15

Cute book for preschoolers which also teaches an important lesson. Lee is a cantankerous little boy who does not like to cooperate when it comes to bath time. One night his mother gets fed up and gives up before she finishes the job. Lee goes to bed with one ear washed. As the unwashed ear begins to itch, he calls out for his mother. Little did Lee realize how grievous the consequences could be. He never dreamed that he would need a doctor and the whole town to relieve him of his plight.

Four rhyming lines on a page make the story an easy read aloud or bedtime story. Stylized cartoon-like illustrations emphasize the lesson. The hyperbole certainly shows why good hygiene is important. Recommended for parents and teachers of children ages three to six.

This was an interesting book with some great, funny Illustrations. It is great for the real little ones but a little older kid may find it a bit too silly.

When Lee doesn’t wash properly something happens and the next morning his ear grows, grows and then grows some more. It’s a bit scary, but by the end everything works out and Lee is back to normal with a better understanding of how important hygiene is.

In between the rhymes are well done and the pictures will make you smile or laugh. My only complaint is the story seems a bit short, but then that could be good for a small child’s attention span.
