This book is glimpse back into an America that is rapidly vanishing. Robert Ruark can rightly be considered the dean of serious sporting writers. Gene Hill is very good, but only wrote short pieces. Hemingway was vaster, but his angst and internal gordian knot muddy the clear waters. Ruark walks the top rail of the fence: you get the very best of it all. And nowhere does he do it better than in his two "Old Man and the Boy" collections. Others here have said it, but there are stories here that will break your heart clean in two with their aching beauty, their crystal clear images, the smells and tastes of a life spent in rural North Carolina before television. My personal favorite is "September Song", which is, along with "The Road to Tinkhamtown", one of the two or three finest pieces of American sporting literature ever put down. Any appreciation for American sporting literature must begin with Ruark, and any study of Ruark must begin with the Old Man. Without him, you'll never grasp "Horn of the Hunter", or even "Uhuru" or "Something of Value". The Old Man is the key to all the locks. Favorite quote: "Only hunting and mountain climbing are sports. The rest are just games."

The Old Man and the Boy
By Mike DiSalvo
Ruark's book conjures up memories of my own Old Man. The same guidelines on handling guns and how to shoot are still valid today. Some of the more important parts of this book deal with just going hunting, fishing , etc. not with the results of the day, but why we go do these things. Learn why fishing isn't about catching fish. Learn why some dogs are made to hunt and some aren't. The last chapter "All He Left Me Was The World", is not to be read by the tenderhearted. It strikes a chord with any of us who have lost our Old Man. I too went hunting the day of the Old Man's funeral, I know that's what he would have wanted, and so does Ruark.

A Classic American Masterpiece with a message for today!
By A Customer
I first read The Old Man and the Boy when I was a youngster growing up in downstate Illinois. My Paternal Grandfather and my Father were in the sporting goods business, and were devout hunters and fishermen. Everything of value that I have retained to this day I learned at the feet of my two "Old Men". While sitting by a lake with a cane pole, waiting for a bluegill to come along, or freezing in a duck blind on the Mississippi River in the cold of winter, I was passed down the rules of sportsmanship and fair play. The kind of lessons that are taught in the Old Man and the Boy are for every generation to learn and cherish; "Clean up your own mess, consider the feelings of others, have respect for the land, water, and the other creatures who share it with us, practice conservation, know when to speak, and how to listen" Robert Ruark has spun a tale of wonder and delight, I highly recommend this book to anyone who would enjoy reading a great series of outdoor adventures, in a format that never talks down to the reader, insults your intellegence, or becomes stuffy. An outstanding book!!!

Designing Object-Oriented User Interfaces (Addison-Wesley Object Technology), by Dave Collins

Collins presents a principled approach to designing user interfaces for systems built on modern hardware and software platforms. In the text, Collins defines object-oriented user interface, presents a methodology for designing both the visible features of the interface and the software structures underlying it, and demonstrates how this methodology fits into the context of object-oriented development. Collins provides the reader with a single conceptual model, grounded in standard engineering practice, to guide both external and internal design of the user interface. The author's methodology, based on object-oriented principles, is consistent with other object-oriented methodologies for system and database design.

From the Inside Flap

Designing Object-Oriented User Interfaces presents a principled approach to developing user interfaces for modern hardware and software platforms. It defines what an object-oriented user interface is, and provides a methodology for designing the visible interface and its underlying software. The principles and practices presented here are based on development experience and academic research. The book is intended for both working developers and for students and teachers in academic and industrial settings.

Object-orientation reflects the way people --including end users and system developers-- perceive, think, and act. The foundation for this book is the idea that the same set of object-oriented principles can be applied to end user interfaces and to the internal system structures that implement them. This results in a user interface design methodology that fits seamlessly into object-oriented design and development processes for entire systems.

Design, if it is meaningful, occurs in the context of development (even for students, exercises must assess how the design will function when it is built). To get the most out of this book, it is important to go beyond it and do real designs. Start with tasks that people do, sketch designs for interfaces, implement the sketches, and show the results to potential users. Designers are often surprised by how hard it is to implement simple ideas, and by the way users respond to them. This surprise factor never goes away; becoming comfortable with it is a sign of maturity as a user interface designer.

The same thing goes for this book, I have tested the principles and practices in my own projects and by analyzing their use in other projects large and small. Nevertheless, I am sure there are still surprises in store, and lessons to be learned, I invite your comments and suggestions about any aspect of the book, particularly its applicability to development projects you are involved in. Comments can be sent by electronic mail to dcollins@acm.org, or by post to P.O. Box 24, Pleasantville, NY 10570, USA.Background

Though I was not aware of it at the time, the motivation for this book probably came in 1984 when I first saw an Apple Macintosh computer. I was already a user of graphics systems, but the idea of a computer on which everything was done by manipulating visible images was novel, and profoundly appealing.

Conscious work started in early 1988, when my colleague, Chamond Liu, was putting together a conference on object-oriented systems (held at the IBM Education Center at Thornwood, New York). I was interested both in object-oriented programming languages and in the usability of human-computer interfaces, and Chamond asked me to chair a session on object-oriented user interfaces. He also asked me to make a presentation dealing with the connection (or lack of connection) between the principles of objects, classes, and inheritance as applied to programming languages, and analogous principles applied to the external behavior of user interfaces.

Chamond's request started me on a long journey. As I digested literature from areas as diverse as computer architecture and cognitive psychology, connections became apparent not only between user interfaces and programming, but between systems and methods used to develop them. These connections were manifest in the construction of many significant object-oriented systems, as described by the people who had designed and built them. Since then, my understanding of the connections has been deepened by experience as both developer and user of systems with object-oriented user interfaces.

Starting with my talk at the conference in November of 1988, discussion and presentation of the ideas went on through many tutorials and short courses on aspects of object-oriented user interfaces. Talking with designers and implementors who attended these helped to confirm the basic ideas, and expanded my understanding in areas where I lacked personal experience.

There is now a large body of ideas and methods for object-oriented user interface design. I think it is fair to say that a consensus exists on at least the broad outline of a methodology. By 1992 I felt that making these ideas and methods available within a coherent development framework would advance the practice of design, and the result is this book.Production

This book was produced in camera-ready form from a manuscript written in Microsoft Word and FrameMaker, running on Microsoft Windows. It is set in fonts from the TrueType Lucida family. Screen images and halftone art were processed with ImagePals, from Ulead Systems. Line art was prepared with CorelDraw, from Corel. Application examples done specifically for the book were coded with Smalltalk/V from Digitalk, ParcPlace Smalltalk, and Borland C++.

The availability of tools allowing an author to produce a book, with all its text and artwork, is a remarkable example of what computers can do, and part of a revolution as profound as what followed the invention of moveable type in the 16th century. I thank the developers of the products that allowed me to accomplish this feat, and encourage them to make it easier in the future.Acknowledgments

A book as broad as this synthesizes the work of many people. Ideas have come from published papers, presentations, conversations, and user interface implementations in products and research prototypes. Specific ideas that I have used are acknowledged in the text. In addition, many people have contributed to my general understanding of the field and opened my eyes to possibilities for user interface designs. Though I take full responsibility for any deficiencies in this book, its value could not have been achieved without those people.

The first twenty years of my career in the computer industry were spent in daily contact with customers and end users of computers. I owe my first debt to them, for teaching me things about the experience of human-computer interaction that I could not have learned in any other way.

I have given courses and tutorials based on this material to people from many disciplines and with varying amounts of background knowledge. I thank all the students in those courses for their patience and their feedback. Students pointing out problems based on their experiences led to many improvements in the ideas and methods.

Developing a curriculum in software usability for IBM over the period 1988-1992 provided the opportunity to hear ideas from leading people in the field of user interface design. Contact with people like Bill Buxton, Charles Irby, Ted Nelson, Ben Shneiderman, Edward Tufte, and many others was both educational and inspiring. I am grateful for the support of the human factors community within IBM during that same period. People too numerous to mention gave up their time to help me understand how human factors could be applied in development. Walter Baker, John Bennett, John Gould, Dick Granda, Richard Halstead-Nussloch, and Ron Shapiro were particularly generous. The information development and graphic design communities in IBM also helped me to understand the role of those disciplines in user interface design and development.

Managers and colleagues at the IBM Systems Research Education Center and at the User Interface Institute of IBM Research were consistently helpful and supportive. Chamond Liu, as mentioned above, provided the key idea that got me started. Bob Mack encouraged both the book and the research behind many of the ideas about implementation. Many others provided helpful ideas and encouragement.

Thanks to Dan Joraanstad, of Benjamin Cummings, and Grady Booch, series editor for the Object-Oriented Software Engineering series, for encouraging the book at its inception. Thanks also to Tim Cox, Ari Davidow, Ray Kanarr, Laura Cheu, Melissa Standen, Lisa Jahred, and others at Benjamin/Cummings for keeping it on track as we went along.

The following people provided concrete help while the book was being written, in the form of discussions or reviews of chapter drafts: Walter Baker, Steve Berczuk, Katherine Betz, Grady Booch, Steve Goetze, Reza Jalili, Chamond Liu, Bob Mack, Linn Marks, Brad A. Myers, Steve Otto, Jim Poretta, James Purtilo, Mary Beth Rosson, Kenneth S. Rubin, Drasko Sotirovski, George Vanecek, Mark Wilkes, and Kirk Wolf. Their feedback improved both the content and style of the book.

Thanks most of all to Linn Marks. She has given me a steady stream of visual design ideas for user interfaces and for the book itself. Many ideas here were generated or sharpened in the course of long discussions on the art and science of design. She also provided the constant encouragement I needed to persevere through the period of more than a year, while I struggled to get these ideas down on paper in the form in which you now see them. 080535350XP04062001

Essential reading for all developing computer applications
    By A Customer
Collins cuts right to the quick on this often misunderstood topic. Project manager thru programmer will profit from having this on their desk. It you remember COBOL, FORTRAN and PL/1, then this sbook is syour key to understanding the "new age" of object orientness. Incredibly concise, crystal clear discussions of all the important issues.

Good book if you can read it
    By John Margaglione
The author of this book has obviously spend a great deal of time in academia -- much to his detriment. The book reads like a college-level psychology textbook, complete with references to the myriad other people upon whom his work is drawn.

For example, the author is not content to just define a term and move on. Instead, he reviews the entire history of the term, what other people have thought about the term, and then summarizes all of the thoughts. Geez, there are even examples at the end of each chapter.

If my review is hard to read, I blame it on the fact that I have been reading this book for the past hour.

But, if you can get past the pedantic writing style, you will find a good deal of useful information. The concept of object-oriented user interfaces is often misinterpreted and/or mis-implemented. There is a detailed history of the object-oriented GUI, and good discussions on the human factors that lead to good GUI designs.

One note is that the book was published in 1995, so brace yourself for lots of examples from the leading GUI of that time: Windows 3.1! Windows NT is only mentioned as 'Cairo'. But as is true of many design models, the age of the book really has no relevance.

One of the rare books that addresses OO style GUI design
    By tdayton@acm.org
This excellent book is one of a mere few books that thoroughly and competently addresses object-oriented (OO) style of graphical user interface (GUI) design. Note that OO GUI *style* is entirely independent of whether the GUI is implemented with OO technology. A strength of this book is its comprehensibility by programmers, in addition to GUI designers.
Here are two other essential ones: Design Guide for Multiplatform Graphical User Interfaces (LP R13, Issue 3, by McFarland & Dayton, 1995, Piscataway, NJ: Bellcore), and Object-Oriented Interface Design: IBM Common User Access guidelines (by IBM, Carmel, IN: Que Corp.)
Here's a merely fair quality but essential one: The Windows guidelines for software design. (by Microsoft, 1995, Redmond, WA: Microsoft Press).

    A New York Times Bestseller!

The author of the beloved One for the Murphys gives readers an emotionally-charged, uplifting novel that will speak to anyone who’s ever thought there was something wrong with them because they didn’t fit in.

“Everybody is smart in different ways. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its life believing it is stupid.”

Ally has been smart enough to fool a lot of smart people. Every time she lands in a new school, she is able to hide her inability to read by creating clever yet disruptive distractions.  She is afraid to ask for help; after all, how can you cure dumb? However, her newest teacher Mr. Daniels sees the bright, creative kid underneath the trouble maker. With his help, Ally learns not to be so hard on herself and that dyslexia is nothing to be ashamed of. As her confidence grows, Ally feels free to be herself and the world starts opening up with possibilities. She discovers that there’s a lot more to her—and to everyone—than a label, and that great minds don’t always think alike.

    From School Library Journal
Gr 4–6—In her second middle grade novel (One for the Murphys, 2012), Mullaly Hunt again paints a nuanced portrayal of a sensitive, smart girl struggling with circumstances beyond her control. Ally is great at math, and her ability to visualize moving pictures makes her an amazing artist, but she has a terrible secret: reading is almost impossible for her. By using her wits and adopting a troublemaking persona, she's been able to avoid anyone finding out a truth she is deeply ashamed of, but a new teacher at school seems to see right through the defenses she's built. While Ally struggles to accept the help that Mr. Daniels offers, she also deals with a father deployed in the Middle East, crushing loneliness, and an authentically awful set of mean girls at school. Ally's raw pain and depression are vividly rendered, while the diverse supporting cast feels fully developed. As the perceptive teacher who finally offers the diagnosis of dyslexia, Mr. Daniels is an inspirational educator whose warmth radiates off the page. Best of all, Mullaly Hunt eschews the unrealistic feel-good ending for one with hard work and small changes. Ally's journey is heartwarming but refreshingly devoid of schmaltz.—Elisabeth Gattullo Marrocolla, Darien Library, CT

    Review
    * “Unforgettable and uplifting. . . . Deals with the hardships of middle school in a funny, yet realistic and thoughtful manner. Ally has a great voice, she is an unforgettable, plucky protagonist that the reader roots for from page one. This novel is a must-have.”—School Library Connection, STARRED REVIEW

    * “Filled with a delightful range of quirky characters and told with heart, the story also explores themes of family, friendship, and courage in its many forms. . . . It has something to offer for a wide-ranging audience. . . . Offering hope to those who struggle academically and demonstrating that a disability does not equal stupidity, this is as unique as its heroine.”—Booklist, STARRED REVIEW

A Must Read For All Children
    By Kristen Devoe
My son's school is using this book for a program they are doing called "One Book, One School" where all the kids in every grade (5th - 8th), all the staff, all the teachers will be reading this together. They will do activities corresponding to what they are reading, discuss the book, really dive into it. I bought 2 copies of the book. 1 for my son so he will have his own copy and doesn't have to borrow from the school (the school does not have enough for all the children, so they will not be permitted to take the books home), and 1 for me so that I can read along with him and continue the discussion at home. I think this is a fantastic book and I hope that more schools adopt the "One Book, One School" program and have their children read this.

NEW CLASSIC for children's bookshelves and classroom read alouds.
    By Chris Koppelman
I adored ONE FOR THE MURPHYS, and I couldn't wait for this book to arrive. I knew this author had the chops to deliver another excellent book, and I was not disappointed. The well-drawn characters are lovable, sympathetic and unique. Mr. Daniels, Albert, Keisha, and Ally inspired me. Hunt's explanations of dyslexia and specific examples will promote understanding and respect without being didactic or preachy. This book will become a classic read aloud staple in classrooms everywhere. It's the kind of book you want to share, you HAVE to share. Thank you, Lynda Mullaly Hunt, for a beautifully crafted, entertaining, heart-filled piece of literature for young people. It does what the best MG novels do; it offers HELPS and HOPE. (and keeps us giggling)

Historical Register of Virginians in the Revolution, by John H. Gwathmey

The definitive work on Virginians in the Revolution, this compilation of over 65,000 names supersedes even the great researches of Eckenrode and McAllister. All data that could be found in the files of the War and Navy Departments, the State Archives and Land Office, the County Court order books of the period, early and accredited histories, and scores of miscellaneous sources are included. The men are listed alphabetically by surname, with references to the documents in which evidence of service is found. In the case of officers, for example, the material is remarkably complete. It has been possible to establish the dates of their commissions, when they took their oaths of allegiance, their promotions, citations for gallantry, deaths, and amounts of bounty land awarded them. Even with privates, for whom data is notoriously limited, Gwathmey was able to find men who were receiving pensions long after the war and, thus, establish their post-war residences. For persons interested in tracing the descendants of Virginia soldiers, and who wish to understand the magnitude of Virginia's contribution to the American cause, this volume is invaluable.

This is a source approved by the Daughters of the American Revolution.

I recently joined the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and have been looking for other Patriots in my family tree. The Historical Register of Virginians in the Revolution by John H. Gwathmey is a source that the DAR will accept. I purchased both volumes and have found them very useful when looking up data or attempting to establish a new Patriot. This set of books have paid for themselves in time and gas to run to the genealogical library.

Under Fire: The Untold Story of the Attack in Benghazi, by Fred Burton, Samuel M. Katz

The New York Times bestselling inside account of the attack against the U.S. diplomatic and intelligence outposts in Benghazi, Libya

On the night of September 11, 2012, the American diplomatic mission at Benghazi, Libya, came under ferocious attack by a heavily armed group of Islamic terrorists. The prolonged firefight, and the attack hours later on a nearby CIA outpost, resulted in the deaths of four Americans, including the American ambassador to Libya, Christopher Stevens, the Information Officer, Sean Smith, and two former Navy SEALs, Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty, working for the Central Intelligence Agency.

After the fall of Qaddafi, Benghazi was transformed into a hotbed of fundamentalist fervor and a den of spies for the northern half of the African continent. Moreover, it became the center of gravity for terrorist groups strategically situated in the violent whirlwinds of the Arab Spring. On the eleventh anniversary of the 9/11 attacks against the United States, a group of heavily armed Islamic terrorists had their sights set on the U.S. diplomatic and intelligence presence in the city.

Based on the exclusive cooperation of eyewitnesses and confidential sources within the intelligence, diplomatic, and military communities, Fred Burton and Samuel M. Katz reveal for the first time the terrifying twelve-hour ordeal confronted by Ambassador Christopher Stevens, Sean Smith, his Diplomatic Security (DS) contingent, and the CIA security specialists who raced to rescue them.

More than just the minute-by-minute narrative of a desperate last stand in the midst of an anarchic rebellion, Under Fire is an inspiring testament to the bravery and selflessness of the men and women who put their country first while serving in one of the most dangerous regions in the world.

    Review

“Jeff Gurner narrates this book as if it were a thriller whose ending is still a mystery. His insistent, clear voice and sometimes breathless pacing accentuates the action and keep the listener interested throughout. Well worth a listen.” ―AudioFile Magazine

“This is a gripping, authoritative account of a tragedy that's not going away. What happened in Benghazi on that fateful night counts, because it's the moment when the Arab Spring took a wrong turn and drove into the abyss. It tells the story of a Washington too blinded by politics to see the facts. A wonderful book.” ―Robert Baer, former CIA operative and New York Times bestselling author of See No Evil

“A stunning reconstruction of events surrounding the terrorist attacks in Benghazi. It will be particularly instructive to those who have a limited knowledge of the processes for providing security for our diplomats serving abroad.” ―B. R. Inman, Admiral, U.S. Navy (Ret.)

    Well written account of Benghazi
    By agoldstein
A well written story about the many things that went wrong at Benghazi. The people of Libya lost a true friend when they lost Chris Stevens. Very sad that the US made mistakes with the protections of the embassies and in the delays in sending help which caused the loss of lives of Ambassador Stevens, Information Officer Sean Smith, and CIA operatives Glen Doherty and Tyrone Woods. A very sad subject that was well written.

Excellent narrative of what really happened at Benghazi. Should be required reading for everyone who still tries to blame Hillary Clinton for the deaths of the 4 Americans in this tragic incident.

An Epic Account of an American Tragedy
    By Jennifer Bruning
Fred Burton and Sam Katz are two of the nation's leading experts on radical Islamic terrorism. They've come together to unravel the tangled web of the attack in Benghazi in September 2012. In the process, they'e created a truly special book. At once inspiring, maddening, and ultimately, tragic, the book chronicles the ordeal of those brave Americans who faced the fires that day.

This book will rewrite the cloudy narrative of Benghazi once and for all. It is a must read for all Americans and anyone interested in understanding the implications the attack will have on the United States and its foreign relationships.

    Cannot recommend highly enough.

    Good textbook
    By BlackHeartArt
AutoCad is not very intuitive or user friendly and is not worth the price for the casual user. I am sure AutoCad is very useful for an expert engineer but it is like trying to fly a 747 when all you really need is a Cessna Cub if you are a casual user. There are a lot of command prompts and parameter settings that you have to know to make AutoCad perform efficiently, which are impossible to know without a manual. This text book explained AutoCad well with plenty of exercises. I suppose the author did an effective job trying to make AutoCad understandable. However, the indexes for the command prompts in the back of the book were confusing in the way they were grouped which made it difficult to find them.

    Typos
    By Katie
Had this as a textbook for an Auto CAD intro class. The book has A LOT of typing errors, and labeling mistakes. This could sometimes be very frustrating when trying to follow the instructions and redoing problems to find out that a typo or a missed step is the issue.

    "Selected" means book 3 selections
    By Charlton
After reading the previous review, I thought that this book would be a great way for me to practice sight reading, with hopefully a selection of different exercises of different difficulties from books 1, 2 and 3, but this was only book 3, and far to difficult for me. Perhaps in several years I can get to that level, but for now, this is just going to take up shelf space.
