About the Author
Edward Plaster has taught horticulture and soil science for more than 30 years. He belongs to the American Society for Horticultural Science (ASHS) and the Soil and Water Conservation Society (SWCS). A former ASHS Certified Professional Horticulturist, Professor Plaster remains active in several national and local trade organizations, certification and accreditation programs, including the Minnesota Nursery and Landscape Association and Associated Landscape Contractors of America. Professor Emeritus from Dakota County Technical College, Mr. Plaster continues to make professional presentations about soils to various organizations.

Entertaining enough for the layman

I'm not really the intended audience of this book, being a home gardener rather than a student, but I enjoyed it just the same. The book is much easier to read than I expected, with plenty of white space and pictures to make it easy on the eyes. I was interested to see the inclusion of topics like city gardening, an in-depth look at animal manures, and even a cameo appearance of permaculture in addition to the basics that you'd expect.

But the heart of the book, of course, is a look at what makes soil do its job, and that part of the book really helped fill in a lot of gaps in my education. I'm confident I'll make better choices in the garden now with this book's information under my belt. Yes, I would have preferred not to pay $180 for a used copy of a book, but none of the soil books geared to laymen that I've read so far have been worth their salt. So I guess a textbook is worth the higher price if it really delivers.

Healing and Hope for the Unloved and Unaffirmed

An excellent book revealing the importance of unconditional love and affirmation in one's life. Baars & Terruwe describe the discovery and symptoms of Emotional Deprivation Disorder -- a syndrome which results from a lack of unconditional love and emotional strengthening in one's life. EDD manifests itself with symptoms such as feelings of loneliness, insecurity, insignificance, and worthlessness. Unaffirmed persons generally feel unwanted, unloved, inferior, depressed, afraid of the world, oversensitive, unlovable, and unable to make friends and relate to others. This results in an emotional prison which is only able to be opened from the outside -- by another person giving unselfish, unconditional, authentic love. To be healed, the individual must feel worthwhile to another person, loved, and understood. Truly an important book for our time -- a time when so many are deprived of the emotional affirmation and love that they need.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone even though they are not suffering from emotional disorder but could understand others better. This book has changed how I feel about myself, and I can finally understand and identify with so many things that didn't make sense as to why I was feeling so badly about myself and had several depressions. A plus for anyone's library. I have bought one for my brother as I'm keeping mine as a reference.

A very important book.

After reading this book, I have greater insight into my own weakness as well as better understanding other friends and family members. Once you better understand these things you are better able to grow and heal. This is a very important book. Many people have noticed a positive change in me since I have read and put into practice the principles in this book. I keep extra copies on hand for people who want to know why and how I have changed for the better.

Pachman elaborates the various kinds of strategy that can be employed, and shows how each leads to tactical opportunities. It has been said that his section on the Rook alone make his book indispensable to the serious chess player, since the Rook is so important in both middle and endgames.
Pachman presents his method in the form of a thorough, systematic, analytical text, which draws upon scores of great games for exemplification. Both classical and very recent masters are included, although stress is on the moderns: Capablanca, Alekhine, Dr. Lasker, Rubinstein, Nimzovich, Botvinnik, Reshevsky, Bronstein, Smyslov, and Spasski.

Best One-volume strategy book

This is the best one-volume strategy book on the market for all players below the USCF 2000 (Expert) level rating.
It contains virtually all of the information contained in other classic, highly-recommended texts such as ; My System (Nimzovich), Chess Praxis (Nimzovich), The Game of Chess (Tarrasch), and The Middlegame (Books 1 & 2 by Euwe).
The major difference between Pachman's book and the others is that it is the most modern, concise, and highly readable. Some of the other titles are quite verbose and occaisionally stray from the main lesson being presented.
In short, this book contains nearly everything an aspiring chessplayer needs to know about strategy to become a strong player.
Another bonus, as with all books from Dover, is the price tag. Dollar for Dollar, you would be hard-pressed to find a better value anywhere!

Decent Introduction

This book is an abridgement of Pachman's three-volume "Complete Chess Strategy", which ranks as one of the classic works on strategic and positional chess (Another such work would be Euwe and Kramer's "The Middlegame", in two volumes.). Unfortunately the abridgement doesn't capture the rich and full flavor of the original. Many of the classic examples have had to be omitted for reasons of space. A player of class C strength might learn something from this abridgement, but for stronger players I would recommend the original three volumes. It's a fact of life that the general level of chess strength and erudition has risen markedly during the last several years; the level of knowledge that once would have sufficed to maintain B strength is, alas, inadequate.
Many of the topics discussed in Pachman now have specialist texts addressing them. For example, for isolated pawns, see Baburin's "Winning Pawn Structures"; for the major pieces see Damsky's "The Heavy Pieces in Action". There are numerous other examples. Pachman can be usefully employed as an introduction to these more specialised books.
Whether a player works with the abridgement or the original, I recommend he also have available Watson's "Secrets of Modern Chess Strategy", which lends perspective on the contemporary state of understanding of strategic and positional chess.

In my view, better than My System

Do you want to improve your chess. Are you rated under 2000? Then this is a good place to start. This is much easier reading than the often verbose and self-serving My System. Pachman's writing is clear and insightful. Buy this book and play through every few years. You will almost certainly gain new insights into chess with every reading. This book should be on every aspiring chess player's shelf alongside Larry Evan's New Ideas in Chess, Hans Kmoch's Pawn Power in Chess, David Bronstein's Zurich 1953, Bobby Fischer's My Sixty Memorable Games, Mikhail Botvinnik's 100 Selected Games, Mikhail Tal's Life and Games of Mikhail Tal, Alexander Alekhine's Best Games and Richard Reti's Masters of the Chessboard. That is some pretty lofty company, but Modern Chess Strategy is worthy of it. Oh, and you can't beat the price.

Great book for learning PK/PD concepts and their applications

"Basic Pharmacokinetics and Pharmacodynamics: An Integrated Text Book and Computer Simulation" is a very finely crafted comprehensive introduction to PK/PD concepts and their practical applications using PK/PD simulations. Author covered both PK and PD in fair amount of details and further complemented them with PK/PD simulations (extremely helpful!!!) to maximize the understanding on how these concepts are implemented in real world scenarios. The book is organized in a thoughtful way with clear objectives and goals. The text is simple, clear and straight forward to follow. The author first provides thorough understanding of PK and then delves into PD followed by some advanced PK/PD models.
Author provided adequate number of equations and supportive derivations to clearly explain the mathematics behind useful PK/PD models. The appendices further emphasize on some useful calculations and practice sessions. Overall, all concepts are well explained and illustrated with PK/PD simulations. I highly recommend this book to graduate students, health care professionals, industrial pharmacologists and PK/PD scientists.

If you really want to learn about Pharmacokinetics/dynamics-This is where you should start

To begin with, if big words, unexplained diagrams, unemphasized important concepts and unexplained processes frustrate and cause you long nights of studying, then here is why this book may be a great choice for you. Well, I am a pharmacy student who learns only when things are taught to me in a simple and clear manner. I do not randomly understand things on my own! (I hope we are all in the same boat) Upon opening this book, from page one, everything was explained. The author does not assume you know concepts such as rate processes, rather she explains them to you to assure that you know them and, at the same time, to refresh your memory of then! Everything the author discusses is explained in the book. Important concepts are repeated and emphasized....they will POP out at you! Diagrams to help you understand concepts are included numerous times per chapter, captions and explanations are included to guide you through the graphs/diagrams. The chapters are very related to each other, so the knowledge aquired from one chapter will be related to the knowledge aquired from the next. The author includes appendixes to explain how to use programs such as Excel to be able to create your own graphs (you do not have to waste your time browsing Google!) Furthermore, the book is very light in weight...you will not dread bringing it to class everyday! (In fact this is the most light weight textbook I own). One more important thing: the chapters are CONCISE and straight to the point...no unnecessary information is included. Each chapter is fairly short and easy to read...you will not be afraid to pursue reading this book.

This textbook provides a very clear explanation of basic pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic concepts. It is well illustrated. This book serves as a welcomed alternative to other texts that emphasize mathematical rigor at the expense of more intuitive explanations. I would highly recommended this book for pharmacy students as well as for other health care professionals who are interested in learning more about the basic principles that govern drug dosing and administration.

Just right size for me

Don't have time right now to sit down with a whole book, but this bite-sized ed is great! Was not disappointed at all. I've really enjoyed watching Ching-He Huang on t.v. in the past. I was super excited to read about how she has been changing her diet and recipes recently because I became diabetic not long ago and have been changing my diet as well. Clean eating is the way to go! I'll be trying many of these recipes and getting the full-length book as well.

The personal poems in the second section were written between December, 1973 and February, 1977. They clearly express the ambivalence of Helen’s relationship with Jesus: both her love and longing for him, and her fears and wavering faith.
The third section covers a wider span of time—from “The Gifts of Christmas” to Helen’s final poem, “The Second Easter,” completed in March, 1978. The last poem in this section, “Requiem,” was written for a friend whose mother was near death.
The fourth section consists of a long blank verse poem in five sections which is printed here in prose form. It bears a marked similarity to the material in the Course, both in form and content.
A COURSE IN MIRACLES, a beloved spiritual publication that has been translated into over 25 languages and is being studied by students all over the world, was scribed by Dr. Schucman between 1965 and 1972 through a process of inner dictation. She experienced the process as one of a distinct and clear dictation from an inner voice, which earlier had identified itself to her as Jesus. Helen Schucman's scribing of A Course in Miracles began with these words: "This is a course in miracles, please take notes."

The 1993 battle in Mogadishu between American soldiers and Somali militiamen gets a human-scale retelling in this jaunty but harrowing memoir. Durant went down with the Black Hawk he piloted; after a terrifying crash in which his back and leg were broken and a violent fire-fight, he was held captive for ten days by Somali militiamen as a pawn in their stand-off with American peacekeeping forces. Frightened and in agony from his wounds, he called on his survival training to help him endure, but he also relied on the empathy of some of his Somali captors, especially the gruff but sympathetic guard who feeds, bathes and bonds with him. Durant is a gung-ho army honcho, not much given to introspection, and the book often takes leave of the captivity narrative to recount his exploits in conflicts from Panama to Iraq, and to celebrate the bravado and leave-no-man-behind esprit-de-corps of his �lite "Night Stalkers" helicopter unit. The writing is full of terse jargon, weapons specs, helicopter-assault procedural and special-ops swagger ("They were the kind of professionals who could pick off a rabbit from a roller-coaster with a BB gun"). But overall the story remains taut, and the prose evokes both the chaos of combat and the anxiety of confinement. Durant's perspective on the Somalia conflict is somewhat limited and jingoistic ("Mogadishu was Tombstone, and we were Wyatt Earp"), but his is a revealing portrait of the human face of war. 16 pages of b&w photos.

The only survivor after a firefight with hostile forces of warlord Mohamed Farah Aidid, the author recounts the conditions of his 11 days in captivity, with experiences that ranged from heroic to gruesome, harrowing, bizarre, and compassionate. Suffering severe injuries to his back, leg, and face, moved under guard through a sequence of rudimentary facilities in a volatile combat environment, and facing the deadly risk of discovery by rival clans, Durant became a political pawn receiving global media attention. Readers of Mark Bowden's Black Hawk Down (Atlantic Monthly, 1999) who wished for a more technically detailed analysis of the mission's operational aspects will savor this account. The book also incorporates chapters on the arduous training required to earn a spot in an elite squadron and lays groundwork for appreciating the Mogadishu engagement by describing prior high-risk special operations in Korea, Panama, and Iraq in which Durant participated. A Tale of Heroes in a Time for Heroes

IN THE COMPANY OF HEROES, by Mike Durant is an exceptional read ... heartbreaking and heroic and stunning in its honesty and humility. For those who don't remember (how could you not?), Durant was the Blackhawk pilot shot down over Mogadishu in 93 and held by Adid for 10 days. Although he contributed to Mark Bowden's BLACK HAWK DOWN (an exceptional piece of journalism, to be sure), this is the first time Durant has gone public with more than a perfunctory detailing of the events of his capture and his time as a POW in Mogadishu. It is an exceptional story of courage and the Human capacity to survive, as well as an extraordinary testament to the worth of intelligence, integrity, training and psychological/emotional strength under the most intense of circumstances.
Mike Durant, as he has proven time and time again, is a 100% class act with absolutely no delusions of grandeur. Though never shy about acknowledging his own skills and talents, Durant doesn't indulge in a single self-serving statement throughout the narrative, which includes extensive material on other special ops missions, as well as the Somalia fiasco. Neither does he lavish praise unduly on folks who were doing what they are trained and paid to do. What he does do is call it exactly as it happened to him, avoiding undue political rhetoric and unfailingly giving credit to those who kept him alive and brought him home.
Through his eyes, we see the men Donavan Briley and Cliff Wolcott and others lost in Somalia were -- not only as soldiers, but also as friends. By showing us the loss these men are to Durant personally, we begin to feel the loss such men always are to the country they serve at cost of life and limb. In recording this incident from an unprecedented POV and refusing to pander to the sensationalism that marked the media coverage or succumb to the self-aggrandizing agenda that usually mitigates such personal accounts of horrific events, Mike Durant offers insight into the unimaginable; and in doing so, creates a testament to both his own heroism and to the unsung heroism of others who willingly lay their lives on the line to protect our way of life.

Exceptionally Written and Highly Inspirational

There are certain phrases that the families of soldiers never want to hear: "wounded in action", "missing in action", "killed in action", and "prisoner of war." But every time the United States enters a conflict, it is almost inevitable that some wife or husband, some mother or father, or some child will hear those words. They are words that many of us will never really understand. Even with the advent of imbedded reporters and glamorized battle coverage on television, there are some aspects of war that the average American simply cannot comprehend. But in 1993, the family of CW4 Michael J. Durant would learn about the true horrors of war.
For those who have read Mark Bowden's BLACK HAWK DOWN or seen the movie, Chief Warrant Officer Michael J. Durant is a familiar character. He was one of the Black Hawk pilots shot down in the United Nations' peacekeeping effort in Somalia. Fortunately for Durant, he was not killed in the crash or the frenetic firefight that ensued. Rather, he was dragged through the streets with a fractured leg and broken back, loaded into a pickup truck, and held hostage by a Somalian militia. During his ten days of captivity, Durant was held in filthy "prisons", shot by angry militiamen, and given only aspirin for the pain caused by his wounds. But during his entire ordeal, Durant and his positive attitude survived. In fact, even his captors were eventually mesmerized by him in a somewhat reversed kind of "Stockholm Syndrome." They gave him a radio through which he kept up with the peacekeeping efforts and received dedications from other soldiers in his unit. They fed him more food than he could eat, bathed him, and allowed him to read his Bible. It was in that Bible that Durant first wrote IN THE COMPANY OF HEROES, scribbling codes in the margins so that he would remember all of the harrowing details.
IN THE COMPANY OF HEROES is much more than Durant's story of being a prisoner of war. While that would have made an excellent book in and of itself, Durant goes further, giving the reader insights into the rest of his military career. IN THE COMPANY OF HEROES is exceptionally written and gives the reader profound insight into the ugliest parts of war. It is a story that everyone should read and learn from --- not only about war, but also about the human spirit and its willingness to survive in even the harshest of situations.

Michael Durant is a true American Hero

This book was hard to put down. Durant's writing style and sense of humor make it compelling, as if you're hearing a story from a good friend.
The slices of his life besides his captivity in Somalia also give insight into this man and show how they forged his will and gave him the ability to survive his 10 days in captivity and keep his mind intact.
I'd reccomend this book to anyone who has read Black Hawk Down; especially if you think Bowden came off as a Clinton apologist. Durant expresses the feelings of every red-blooded American Serviceman who has served durring the past 10 years!
I found one small error in the book and even it was probably just an oversimplification and not crucial to the plot, itself. Other than that, it's earned a place of honor on my bookshelf. One that is increasingly becoming more "Army" than "Marines". I left the Corps 10 years ago and I'm going into the Army in the next 10 days!
All we need now is for this story to be turned into a movie and done well. The small piece of it shown in Black Hawk Down does not do this man any justice.

Intelligent and Well Founded

Dan Jarrard has such a beautiful way with words. With a logic based and Biblical approach he perfectly explains something that takes most Sabbath Keepers several hours of conversation. The book is effective and efficient and I would recommend it to anyone with questions about Sabbath Keeping Christians!!

THE 7th DAY IS THE 7th DAY

Before I begin I must state I obtained a paperback copy of this book through a giveaway on LibraryThing.com and the following is my honest opinion for this book.

Unlike most individuals who might read this book I'm not a Christian, I'm Jewish [the "original" religion]. I've always been amazed how basically all Christians celebrate the seventh day as Sunday. And how the Roman Catholics perpetually violate the 2nd Commandment by having Christ on the Cross in front of the church and all the statues of various saints throughout the rest of it, statues to which the parishioners pray to.

This book, written by Dan Jarrod, gives a relatively comprehensive reason for the seventh day, the Sabbath, on Saturday; which it accomplishes by citing quotations from both the Old and New Testaments, without approaching it in an overly preaching manner.

All one needs to do to have a totally non-sectarian reason for Saturday is to simply look at any calendar. All weeks start with Sunday and ends with Saturday.

In short, this book should be read by all, regardless of which Abrahamic faith [Judaism, Christianity, or Islam] one might belong to; which is why I'm giving this book 5 STARS.

Dr. Dan Jarrard is a Biblical scholar who discovered the Sabbath truth after being a Sunday-Keeping Pastor for many years. Impressed that he should follow Biblical facts rather than tradition, Dr. Jarrard set out to find what the Bible has to say about keeping the Sabbath.

The book is extremely well written and to the point. It's a short read (1-2 hours) with a few main points that will leave you impressed with a Biblical basis for Sabbath-Keeping. Whether you are a Sabbath-Keeper, the family member of a Sabbath-Keeper, or simply someone wanting to know more about Sabbath-Keeping this is where you should begin!

Dr. Jarrard doesn't spend any time arguing with those that disagree with him but rather focuses on his reasons for Sabbath observance. The book is a simple to follow, short account of the Biblical reasons, "Why Dr. Dan Jarrard is a Sabbath-Keeping Christian" and can give a lot of insight into the reasons why millions of Christians choose to keep the Sabbath every week.

Bizarre more than creepy

I am a huge fan of this author. HUGE FAN! This book . . . Hmm . . . it was one of the strangest books I've ever read. I can't say that I have an opinion good or bad about this book. It was just average, but definitely different. The author was going for creepy, but I found it more to be bizarre. Overall, a different read, but okay.

YA historical mystery with paranormal element!

I love Kelley Armstrong. So I knew that I had to read this book. It is part of the Secrets series (a bunch of authors each write a book where there is a secret involved).

The Unquiet Past is a YA historical mystery with paranormal elements (ghosts/visions/psychic elements).

The book is set in 1964, mostly in Montreal and rural Quebec. The narrator is almost 17 year old Tess. She is in orphan trying to uncover the truth about her parentage.

When the book begins Tess is in Hope Ontario. She lives in the Benevolent Home of Necessitous Girls. It burns down.

This book is definitely a mystery. But I am not sure if I would consider it a thriller. There is a mystery to figure out. but only in the last part of the book do things really happen at a faster pace.

Before the halfway point I would also say that there is not much paranormal. But that does have a huge impact on the last half of the book.

There is a fair amount of French in this book (since a bunch of characters speak that language). But everything is translated. And it is mostly just a line or two followed by the translation.

I don't normally like historical books. But truthfully this did not really feel that historical. It was only set in the 60s. So things weren't that different.

The book deals with visions, which I found very interesting. I liked how this helped move the story along.

This book was unusual. it was interesting, but very different from anything the author has previously written. But I enjoyed it.

Rather Disappointing

I'm a serious Kelley Armstrong fan, but this seemed rather a cheat. Tess leaves the orphanage where she was raised in search of answers based on an out-of-service phone number and an address, which turns out to be an abandoned house, apparently a psychiatric hospital or the equivalent. She finds a boy at the address who's able to explain anything psych related, and decides to help her unravel her (not much of a) mystery.

Predictable, hardly any suspense, rather disappointing......
