Great Introduction to Film Making

As an amateur just starting to get serious about turning my "home movies" into something people actually WANT to watch, I searched for a long time to find an introductory book that not only told you HOW to do things, but WHY you should do them.
After many disappointments, I found this book. While some of the references (script girl is particularly amusing) are very dated, the text mainly covers technique and avoids technology.
The illustrations and printing style point quite obviously to the book's mid-60s origin. An introduction by someone who remembers what it was like to shoot film in 1908 and knew D.W. Griffith personally should tip you off immediately that this book is something special. Still, the illustrations are clear and help illustrate the text's points very well.
In spite of what many recent amateur (and professional) film makers think, technology does not make your film good, it just makes it easy. TECHNIQUE makes it good. And that's what this book teaches in a very clear, readable, and understandable way.
Very highly recommended if you've had your fill of general introductory texts and are looking for real instruction and explanation for how to actually MAKE a film.

A stilll relivant clasic

While some of the references are somewhat dated the techniques this book promotes are still valid and useful. Some are now fashionable to flaunt like crossing views, but this makes some TV unwatchable because its jolting.

The concept to protecting shots seems to have been lost in the video world as an editor I find this much more useful that the so-called coverage junk that I often have to deal with. Reshooting exactly the same scene from the same POV 13 times is NOT useful coverage! The editor needs ways to cut around mistakes and build up scenes by mix and match to do this he needs well thought out shooting not endless repetitions.

If everyone who wants to be a director would read and pay attention to this book film and video quality would improve immensely!

While this book is an essential read for directors, DPs and cameramen; I would highly recommend it to gaffers, grip and sound guys.

An Essential Reference

I film youtube videos and wanted to learn more about cinematography. The book is about cinematography in a time when digital cameras and home studios didn't really exist. The book goes into great details about the basics of cinematography and skills that you can put into place immediately. The authors tone throughout the book is very conversational and I had a great time reading it. If you're new to cinematography I would start here first.

Ada Byron never knew her father, the poet, who fled England shortly after her birth. Unlike other recent writers on the Countess of Lovelace, Joan Baum does justice both to Ada and to her genuine contribution to the history of science. Rather than force tenuous conclusions about this driven personality, Baum appreciates the enigma of a complex young woman who, regardless of motives, anticipated one of the twentieth century's most significant developments.

This is a well-written biography of Countess Lovelace, Augusta Ada Byron King, daughter of Lord and Lady Byron. Byron has recently gained fame for her explanatory notes on Charles Babbage's analytical engine, which constitute the first explanation of the concept of computer programming. In recognition of her efforts, the Department of Defense christened its most recent programming language ADA. A gifted mathematician in a time when women didn't do mathematics, Byron had a complex and contradictory nature. She died in 1852 at the age of 37, and her contribution to our understanding of computers went unappreciated for more than 100 years. This treatment of her life is well documented, portrays an intriguing time period for would-be women scientists, and presents an unusual viewpoint. Hilary D. About the Author
Dr. K. C. Hong is the founding president of KCH Consulting Inc. that provides technical consulting services on thermal recovery and reservoir management to the oil industry worldwide. He retired from Chevron Corporation in 1997 after 34 years of distinguished service in research and field assignments, the last of which was Senior Advisor-Reservoir Engineer. Dr. Hong has done much to advance enhanced oil recovery using steam, reservoir management, and compositional thermal simulation. He has authored over 50 technical papers in the areas of chemical and petroleum engineering and holds 9 U.S. patents. He continues to teach a continuing education course based on the subject book. He was honored with the Thermal and Heavy Oil Pioneer Award in 1999 and the Distinguished Technical Achievement Award in 2001.

LIFE Changing

I had this book for over a year but I didn't read it until now. I was ready to learn and apply to my life. The story of the beggar and the baker was my biggest nugget, and discovered why I was experiencing the same thing over and over again. Judgement, was my downfall and now it has become my gift every time I think about judging. When the student is ready the teacher will appear. The teacher was truly here for me.

Derek made this plain and simple. It is not God's desire to see those who love Him poor. God conscious people are always rich in spirit and THROUGH that spirit the physical manifestations come.

Foundational truths about money

Derek Prince systematically reviews biblical principles, explaining how money can be part of our worship to God, how our use of it expresses the condition of our hearts, principles of sowing and reaping and putting God first.

Not a large or difficult read, it is convicting. In his usual spirit of grace and humility, Derek Prince won't beat you over the head or lay a guilt trip on you. He lets the Word of God and His Holy Spirit gently convict you, so that you can make the changes necessary to be a true steward of God--amply provided for, but freely giving of the resources God gives you to manage for Him. Every follower of Christ should read this!

This is one of the finest books I have ever read on business related topics and I found it 100% accurate. The best thing about this book is that it has tried to reveal both sides of the "functional stupidity" phenomena. How it benefits the organization and how it can harm the industry. I think its a must read for all senior executives. But I fear that if I share snippets from this book in my linkedin profile, I might loose my job.
