I'd buy this book even if I didn't have a pound to lose.

I have to say that I was surprised by this book. There is a lot of good information in it as well as recipes. The author was good enough to include information about the different type of Spiralizers, with the pros and cons of each. Also included is information about what vegetables are good for spiralizing and which aren't. Had I had that information earlier, I would have saved myself a lot of messes. Also included is information about the different shapes you can get from spiralizers and when to use each. I've had a spiralizer forever and I never knew a lot of this stuff. Now, I'd like to address the recipes. Most weight loss books and recipes seem to try too hard to make low calorie food palatable and interesting. They try to be needlessly "different". A lot wind up tasting like dirt. I was surprised and the breadth of the recipes in the book and rather than trying too hard, these recipes are very straight forward, easy and fresh tasting. So while you're eating WAY fewer calories, you are actually getting that feeling you get when you are eating vibrant, fresh food. There are lots of old favorites in there, ones that use heavy pastas and such, redone using veggie pasta. I learned that veggie pasta tastes way better than flour pasta. You don't even have to get used to it. You feel just as full, but it's a cleaner, better full, if you can understand that. There are lots of recipes in this book covering ethnic favorites as well as your every night type of favorite dinner...done much faster and better. I know this is called a weight loss book, but quite frankly, I don't need to lose any weight and I would buy this book just for the great recipes. I did receive this book at a discount in exchange for an honest review. That would never make me review anything more favorably than if I had paid full price for it. Read my other reviews, including ones for things I got for review and you will find quite a few of them aren't glowing. The only thing I can say is buy this book... even if you don't have a pound to lose. Your whole body will feel better eating these recipes.

I got Tom Anderson's other book just for the basics of the spiralizer - what and how to use it.

This book was more for the recipes, as you know, when we get new toys all we want to do is play with them. So this book gives you a nice outlet to do so. Easy, simple, and cheap recipes. Oh yeah, healthy!

I am always looking for a healthier way to cook. That is why i have my spiralizer. This book gives you an understanding of the different devices on the market today and how to use each. I have been spiralizing for four years now and this book has taught me a few tecniques i didnt know about. It will also explain how to replace pasta and rice in your meals so that you can eat healthier. The recipes sound interesting too. I have my eye on a few that i want to try first. Get the book. You cant go wrong.

Bison Are Back! From increasing profit numbers on the balance sheet of producers, to an increasing number of new bison producers, the industry is in a resurgence mode.

This lean volume from the National Bison Association and the Canadian Bison Association captures the essence of the bison business today and provides solid information on nearly every facet of the industry. These concepts are explained clearly and concisely for the reader in 16 short chapters. The information in each chapter builds on previous ones by following a logical sequence of subjects needed to understand and create a successful bison business today.

Beginning with an outline of an historical perspective on the animal and the industry, the book puts the most important section, Creating a Successful Business Plan, right up front. The following sections of the book talk about building the business from the ground up. The underlying foundation of the successful bison producer is clearly stated as the health of the land resource being managed. In turn, managing the animals day to day in a healthy, humane and low stress manner builds on this foundation to create the basis for the production of a healthy, desirable product for the consumer, and profit for the producer.

The handbook follows with several chapters which outline the final finishing, and marketing of the product to the consumer. The full range of diversity in terms of products and their promotion is explained with real life examples and the elements needed to create a successful marketing plan.

For a beginner

The book is VERY basic starting out. If you have raised animals, 4H or others you have these basics of husbandry, pasture and graze practices, and land needs down pat, this book is no help. If you have been in business, you know how to write a business plan,(if you don't I'll write one for you for a small fee), but you don't need this book and Business 101 thru the first 30 pages or so. Finally into specific information about Bison buying and selling, what to look for, Bison specific health issues and so on get down to the needed information you bought the book for. Much of it is almost word for word out of any Ag science course on any college campus. If you took these classes in school this book does little more than put it all together in one handy informational source. Good book for the beginner in Ag and beginner in Business, but who among us is going to go into raising Bison without some background in Business and the Livestock arena? I got about 75% of same information from multiple sources on the internet from the various Bison association sites, the NBA among them.

About the Author
EUGENE D. GENOVESE is Distinguished Professor of Arts and Sciences in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Rochester. In 1987-88 he was on leave at the Humanities Research Center in Research Triangle park, North Carolina, and in 1988-89 he was visiting professor at William and Mary. GENOVESE is former president (1979) of the Organization of American Historians and winner of the Bancroft Prize in 1974 for Roll, Jordan, Roll. He has written, in addition to The Political Economy of Slavery and Roll, Jordan, Roll, The World the Slaveholders Made (Wesleyan 1988), In Red and Black, From Rebellion to Revolution, and, with Elizabeth Fox-Genovese, Fruits of Merchant Capital. He is a graduate of Brooklyn College (B.A. 1953) and Columbia University (Ph.D. 1959). He has been visiting professor at Columbia, Yale, and Tulane and Pitt Professor of American History and Institutions at Cambridge University. His home is in Atlanta, Georgia.

Reformism in chains

When Eugene Genovese, now a senior figure in slavery studies, was a young scholar, the question of whether slavery was "profitable" or "as profitable as free labor" was a vexed one in the academy. These early essays consider the question and the answer he gives is no.

This is undoubtedly correct, but the mystery to me has always been why anybody thought there was a controversy. A drive through the South around 1960 with its tarpaper shacks, coupled with a drive through the Midwest with its comfortable clapboard houses should have given a hint. Even if the difference had been slight or nil, there is a social factor: If the southern agricultural system had been highly profitable, then necessarily all the profits would have been concentrated in a few hands, in contrast with the North and West.

It might not have been obvious at the time, but the example of England, then developing a similar split without slavery, would have hinted at coming problems. The South needed land reform as much as it needed emancipation.

Genovese is concerned, though, with the more immediate prospects of reform (taking the word in its most expansive meaning, to include those who thought that reform meant making slavery bigger and better). According to Genovese, the form that slavery had taken by the 19th century, coupled with the world market for a single staple crop and the marked difference in farming opportunities between the Upper and the Lower South meant that all parties were on a snubbing chain.

The moderate reformers who wished to make slave labor more efficient were stymied by lack of capital and other forces, and the more ambitious reformers who hoped to see American slavery evolve to a form of modified, more or less free labor were even less able to move.

More interesting is his judgment that those who wanted to extend slavery into the western territories, Cuba or Mexico also could not realistically have done so because of the construction of the markets.

This is somewhat speculative but persuasive.

Genovese is not an economic determinist. He pounds on the idea that the planters could not make moves in their own economic interest because these would have weakened them politically and (he makes less of this) in their social status. They were caught in a development trap, partly of their own devising.

It can happen anywhere. Just recently Robert Rubin tried lamely to explain why the huge bank he helped direct failed to avoid the dangerous mortgaging practices that nearly brought it and the rest of the economy down: He claimed to have known the risks but said the bank could not afford not to participate.

The conclusion I would draw from that -- as from Southern history -- is that some cases are beyond the reach of meliorists; they can be fixed only by revolutionary means. The South had its revolution, although the old regime made a comeback that retarded economic changes for another century; but it finally got its effective revolution and has prospered at last.

Wall Street, too, had its revolution in the `30s, was recaptured by the old regime, failed again and awaits its effective remaking.

Slavery as an Economic System: Profit or Loss for the Masters?

All reviews are, however much you wish to make a scientific exercise of them, colored by your personal bias and experience. Political economical interpretations bring to mind right away a 'Marxist' interpretation, and that is the bias that I started the book with. The author, however, presents a descriptive study of the economy present in the South in the nineteenth century, based as it was, on the unpaid labor of slaves. The final judgement on the pros an cons is based on the economic terms of the system and not on its morality as some enemies of slavery frequently fall back on, although justifiedly. The slave economy seems to have been a profitable system or it would not have subsisted as long as it did.
The slave economy was profitable enough to encourage slaveholders to invest their profits in land and more slaves, rather than in manufacture, as the North was doing, for fear of a free white laborer class that might rival their social level, but unwilling yo permit the slaves to reach this same level, for the same reasons. In the meantime, the North with a pool of free paid labor with an incentive to join the propertied class and growing as more and more white immigrants came, left the South behind, in a condition comparable to what in the twentieth century the United States would be to the third world countries, providers of staples as the South did to the North, the West Indies and Europe, and customer of their manufactures and e'n depending of the North for a good portion of their food supplies.
I had read about slavery in the abstract or in personal cases, but never considered it in its details as an economic system, and Professor Genovese has helped me understand this facet of the system which underlies so many of the problems that the United States still faces today.

Great book! The Company doesn't run our Union Local anymore!

The author has written this book in a question and answer format, with additional, easy-to-understand commentary. He cuts right to the heart of the Steward's ultimate question of "...how can I stop the Company from pushing me and the rest of the Union Local around?". He also provides hundreds of citations from National Labor Relations Board decisions to back up the rights of Stewards. We've been using this book for our Local's Stewards for about four months, and already we've turned the tables on the Company. They no longer push us around. Now our Local deals with the Company from a position of equality and strength, rather than subservience. Try this book... you will not be sorry!

Wonderful

I met the author at one of our District meetings--he was giving teaching one of the workshops. It's there that I purchased this book. I see that it's unavailable now so I wish I had purchased more (for the rest of my EBoard). This book was very informative and easy to read.

Verticality, architectural and social, is the lofty idea at the heart of Colson Whitehead's odd, sly, and ultimately irresistible first novel. The setting is an unnamed though obviously New Yorkish high-rise city, the time less convincingly future than deliciously other, as it combines 21st-century engineering feats with 19th-century pork-barrel politics and smoky working-class pubs. Elevators are the technological expression of the vertical idea, and Lila Mae Watson, the city's first black female elevator inspector, is its embattled token of upward mobility.

Lila Mae's good ol' boy colleagues in the Department of Elevator Inspectors are understandably jealous of the flawless record that her natural intelligence and diligence have earned, and understandably delighted when Number Eleven in the newly completed Fanny Briggs Memorial Building goes into deadly free fall just hours after Lila Mae has signed off on it, using the controversial "Intuitionist" method of ascertaining elevator safety. It is, after all, an election year in the Elevator Guild, and the Empiricists would do most anything to discredit the Intuitionist faction. Everyone on both sides assumes that Number Eleven was sabotaged and Lila Mae set up to take the fall. "So complete is Number Eleven's ruin," writes Whitehead, "that there's nothing left but the sound of the crash, rising in the shaft, a fall in opposite: a soul." Lila Mae's doom seems equally irreversible.

Whitehead evokes a world so utterly involving to its own denizens that outside reality does not impinge on its perfect solipsism. We the readers are taken hostage as Lila Mae strives to exonerate herself in this urgent adventure full of government spies, underworld hit men, and seductive double agents. Behind the action, always, is the Idea. Lila Mae's quest reveals the existence of heretofore lost writings by James Fulton, father of Intuitionism, a giant of vertical thought, whose fate is mysteriously entwined with her own. If she is able to find and reveal his plan for the Black Box, the perfect, next-generation elevator, the city as it now exists will instantly be obsolescent. The social and economic implications are huge and the denouement is elegantly philosophical. Most impressive of all is the integrity of Whitehead's prose. Eschewing mere cleverness, resisting showoff word play, he somehow manages to strike a tone that's always funny, always fierce, and always entirely respectful of his characters and their world. A dizzyingly-high-concept debut of genuine originality, despite its indebtedness to a specific source, ironically echoes and amusingly inverts Ralph Ellison's classic Invisible Man. In a deftly plotted mystery and quest tale that's also a teasing intellectual adventure, Whitehead traces the continuing education of Lila Mae Watson, the first black woman graduate of the Institute for Vertical Transport and thus first of her race and gender to be employed by the Department of Elevator Inspectors. In a ``famous city'' that appears to be a future New York, Lila Mae compiles a perfect safety record working as an ``Intuitionist'' inspector who, through meditation, ``senses'' the condition of the elevators she's assigned. But after an episode of ``total f reefall'' in one of ``her'' elevators leads to an elaborate investigation, Lila Mae is drawn into conflict with one of the Elevator Guild's ``Empiricists,'' those who, unlike Intuitionists, focus their attention on literal mechanical failures. Furthermore , it's an election year for the Guild, pitting Intuitionist candidate Orville Lever against crafty Empiricist Frank Chancre, who has surreptitiously enlisted the muscle of mobster Johnny Shush. Hoping to escape these distractions while proving herself inn ocent, Lila Mae goes ``underground'' and makes some dangerous discoveries about the ideas and the life of Intuitionisms founder, James Fulton, a visionary known to have been working on a ``black box'' that would revolutionize elevator construction and alt er the nature of urban life forever. Lila Mae's odyssey involves her further with such mysterious characters as Fulton's former housemaid and lover, her circumspect ``house nigger'' colleague Pompey, a charmer named Natchez, who claims he's Fulton's nephe w, and sinister Internal Affairs investigator Bart Arbogast. Whitehead skillfully orchestrates these noirish particulars together with an enormity of technical-mechanical detail and resonant meditations on social and racial issues, bringing all into a man y-leveled narrative equally effective as detective story and philosophical novel. I was hooked... until I wasn't

Some really interesting stuff here and wonderfully written, but the elevator theme failed to hook me. I loved the quirky characters, but was hoping for more of a mystery book plot. I felt it was slow moving and not really headed anywhere for most of the book. A lot of what was made out to be really important to the characters failed to convince me that it was really of any major consequence, give the book a sort of hollow feel. Finally the whole sci-fi vibe to the elevator obsession and intuition seemed like it would be the best part of the book, but it ended up feeling really flat and sterile to me.
