SARAH CHILDS is Professor of Politics and Gender at the School of Sociology, Politics and International Studies, University of Bristol, UK. She has published widely on sex, gender and political representation. Her books include New Labour's Women MPs (2004), Women and British Party Politics (2008) and with Mona Lena Krook, Women, Gender and Politics: A Reader (2010).

PAUL WEBB is Professor of Politics at the Department of Politics and Contemporary European Studies, University of Sussex, UK and has held a number of previous and visiting positions in Britain and abroad, most recently at the Australian National University. He is author or editor of numerous publications, including The Modern British Party System (2000), Political Parties in Advanced Industrial Societies (2002) and The Presidentialization of Politics: A Comparative Study of Modern Democracies (2005). Alas, a Disappointment

This work is a brilliant magazine article inflated into a mediocre book. The brilliant part ends with page 26. That page, titled "The Concise Manifesto," is a summary of what conversation ought to be, and it may be worth the price of the entire book. From there on, "The Art of Conversation" uses too many devices familiar to writers with deadlines to meet and spaces to fill: short paragraphs, abundant quotations from others, recurring categories and subcategories with slangy names, lists where ordinary paragraphs would do, and subheadings every few paragraphs. In other words, typography and repetition in place of thought.

Two other observations: The author, Catherine Blyth, is as beautiful as a fashion model, judging by the photograph on the dust jacket, and perhaps for her the art of conversation is not as fraught as it is for the rest of us. Also, she is English and occasionally uses phrases that must be clear on her side of the Atlantic but that puzzle me.

Mind the subtitle

If you're looking (as I was) for a book to help you become better at conversation, keep looking. This book does not do that. As the subtitle says, it's more of a guided tour in which the tour guide has collected (and is keen to point out to you) every piece of printed word throughout recorded history that's even tangentially related to Conversation.

Quotations are absolutely abused throughout the book, to the point where it's very difficult and frustrating to read because Blythe's thoughts, information, or instruction are never really sustained without recalling at least two or three historical figures and getting their thoughts on the subject. And at least one of those will be so obscure and poorly introduced as to negate any import their words may have had.

Blythe does analyze different aspects of conversation as well as offer some vague tips, but rather than really dive into these things, she mentions them more in passing. They seem more like the thread that ties together all the quotations rather than the other way around.

I'm at chapter six (or page 115 in the hardback), and I'm not sure I'm willing to hear her out for another 170 pages. I've not read anything so far that indicates the rest would be anything other than quotes cobbled together with ornate, cutesy prose that's quite inappropriate given the topic at hand.

Thank god I got this remaindered. Even if it were free, I'd recommend friends not waste their time on it. It's just too shallow to provide practical help and too choppy to be an enjoyable read.

The best guide in coin collecting

I started getting the Guide Book of United States Coins (or as many who collect coins call it "The Red Book") back in 2014. I love this book. It has great information on the history of US coins, mintage numbers, good pictures of errors, variations of coins, other notes about certain coins especially rarer ones, and as far as I know, covers every US coin ever minted.

Now, you may be asking, what changes year to year that you feel the need to get one every year? To be honest, not that much. They do update the prices of coins based on market conditions including spot prices of metals used to mint coins, and they also add coins new minted coins. But other than that, not a whole lot changes from year to year.

I use this book as a stepping off point for pricing buying and selling coins. You may want to do a little other research along with this book when buying coins, but having this book has helped my find some amazing deals, and has steered me away from making bad buying decisions.

Beginner in collecting coins, and this book has everything a beginner needs from the parts of a coin to a description and price range, also history on each type of coin. Love it! I feel like a pro after reading it lol. And lots of pictures.

Hinduism for Kids by Shalu Sharma is an ideal research tool for youngsters studying about countries where the religion is practiced, researching different cultures and beliefs, or even interested in the faith itself. Once again Sharma draws upon her lifetime of experience in providing her personal insights along with extensive research in telling readers everything they wanted to know about the basic principles of Hinduism but didn’t know where to begin. Well, look no further, folks.

Readers will be surprised to know how much influence Hinduism has had on modern culture. For example, the ‘Om’ chant that New Age practitioners use to achieve nirvana is actually the short form syllable of the word Omkara, a sacred Hundu word. We also find that the swastika is a symbol of light and life that was subverted by the Nazis for their own purposes. We also learn of the origins of Krishna, who the Beatles popularized during the Sixties. The belief in reincarnation is also explored, a concept that has fascinated the Western world for centuries. Most people have no idea as to the impact that Hinduism has had on our society, and this book will undoubtedly be an eye-opener for most.

Amazing Insights into Hinduism for Kids AND Adults

One of the reasons for so much intolerance in today's world is that we do not understand other people's cultures and religions.

I live in Vancouver Canada where there is a large Indian community. In spite of the fact that I practice yoga, hang out in the Indian markets to purchase spices and frequent Indian restaurants to enjoy the cuisine, I will admit to being very ignorant about Indian culture and the Hindu religion.

I read this book along with my 10 year old grandnephew. We both had a lot of our questions answered.

The author, Shalu Sharma starts out with the basics: What is Hinduism; Who are the Hindus; Where do Hindus live; and What are the Hindu holy books. If you get this far you probably now know 90% more than most non-Hindus!

Next Shalu Sharma answers dozens and dozens of questions about Hinduism, from describing the various Holy books, to the Hinu Gods and influential Gurus. Then Sharma answers some of the more "curiosity factor" questions such as why is the sound OM considered to be a holy sound; why do Hindu women put a dot on their head; and how did the caste system come about.
I especially found the fact that other religions including Buddhists, Jains and Sikhs all originated as off-shoots of Hinduism.

In all this was a fascinating look into the Indian culture and Hinduism. My grandnephew now has a new found understanding of his Indian classmates and I now have a new found appreciation of the Indian food I eat and my Indian friends. Honestly, I did not have the "nerve" to ask why they put that dot on their forehead!

Though this is a kid's book, I urge to you read it with your children. You will all come out with some amazing insights and with a deeper understanding of Hinduism.

My eight year old daughter recently became friends with a girl who's family practices Hinduism. My daughter had a lot of questions about the things she sees at their house and the religion in general. I, unfortunately, had no way to answer her questions. When that wasn't good enough for her, I went looking for a book to educate myself. Lucky for me, I found Hinduism for Kids and was able to educate us both at the same time!

It was well written and the pictures were helpful as well. The next time my daughter had a play date with her new friend, she knew so much accurate information on Hinduism and it surprised everyone. I told the mom about this book and she plans on getting it for her daughter.

Highly recommend!

Focused on Android Development

I chose this book because I wanted something focused solely on "BUILD" the cloud based service from PhoneGap. While not a bad book, I chose poorly. Needs the 'look inside' feature!!!

Disclaimer: I ended up skimming about half the book because I had already used traditional PhoneGap via Xcode plugin, as well as the various sensors on the phone and I only develop for iOS really. I was exclusively interested in PhoneGap Build which is a cloud based service that by-passes much of the need for Xcode and other dev tools. I also skimmed sections dealing with features I wasn't interested in. So take the review for what it is... really a review of half a book.

I just wanted a solid data driven app development path using Build, some database tools, and a text editor. Something to show me how quick and easy it really was. And I wanted a book to spell it out for me because I am tired of giving myself migraines. Maybe I was unrealistic. I'm kinda luke-warm on it overall but can see its value in some settings.

Pros:
The author explains things well. I was worried about spending $55 on a book to find that the writing style or communication difficult to understand. I was happy to find that this was not a problem.
A lot of subjects are covered that I would have found very informative when I was first starting out with app development. Now, its kind of a reference book for me I guess.
It does go into some of the aspects of data management but not deep enough in my opinion. I would have also liked to see different data scenarios; like interacting with cloud data services. It does do some physical web server with Sencha touch but there's one paragraph on OS X and a couple pages on IIS so, again, by this time I was kind of worn out on doing the extra leg work (OS X user).
I'd say its a great book for someone who is newish to Android app dev.

Cons:
Its almost exclusively deals with Android in mind. I'd find many dead ends as there were references to android based Java Activity Files that I wasn't finding reference to in my iOS environment. I'll spend time later on tweaking it so it works for me but I'll probably have to pull it into Xcode (my comfort zone) to do it, and the whole point starting out was to not have to do that. So a little extra explanation on "if you are developing for iOS do this instead..." would have gotten an additional star from my rating.

Its pretty expensive for a book that didn't let you peek inside first. A gamble. I'd much rather have seen a paper cover slimmed down version with more focus on the subject at hand. And a peek at the table of contents.

Conflicted:
I'm mostly conflicted about the overall content. The vast majority of the book is not about PhoneGap BUILD. Nor is it much about multi
platform, but it mentions some info and features for each platform. The subjects it covers are nice (like a large tutorial on jquery mobile that integrates well with the subject) and I felt it was a nice refresher for me. So I liked that and found it useful, but on the flip side, I would have just bought a jquery mobile book in that event.

If someone else does a review that has actually read the whole thing cover to cover, you should probably listen to them instead but those were my thoughts.

The title is misleading

I have never rated a book before because ,so far, I have been able to find some value added in those I have purchased even if they did not fully met my expectations. But this book is different.

The title is misleading as it has only one, out of the 9 chapters, that relates to the Phonegap Build Service. The Phonegap Build Service allows to create apps for various platforms without the hastle of installing SDKs for each one but this book dedicates at least two chapters to the installation/use of such SDKs as well as chapters dedicated to libraries as Sencha Touch and JQuery Mobile that, though may be helpful, are not needed to build apps and of course not needed by the Phonegap Build Service.
The API plugins coverage is very poor. All the information contained in this book may be found on the Internet easily and free, starting by both Phonegap and Phonegap Build websites and their forums.
Potential customers may benefit from being able to see the contents before purchasing, so Amazon do your customers a favor and add the look inside feature.
Buying this book was a compete waste of money and I do not recommend it.

Excellent book for beginners and intermediate developers

I really liked this book. this my first time that I develop for smart devices as a hybrid app. I would've gave it five starts but 'unfortunately' the phonegap build support for iOS7 was at 3.1 and this book was mainly using 2.9 or older version. the 3x has many changes in its configurations that made it almost a new framework for me.on chapter 5, getting to read the contacts was a nightmare. it is not the author's fault, it is a combinations of new additions and a buggy process to add the contacts plugin in phonegap 3.1.

I highly recommend getting this book. the author made it so simple to read and understand for so much information to grasp. he was even kind enough to send me the link to the source code: [...]

She set out to find the evidence to resolve this, and to learn how HIV apparently spread so far and fast. She needed to know more about this virus so went to the foundation research widely held today to have found HIV and proved it caused AIDS. She was then rocked to discover that this same research was investigated for scientific fraud for a five year period by powerful US scientific institutions and by Congress,. Why is this not widely known? She found their reports and discovered they found major errors in this research, some so serious that these made it impossible to repeat these experiments and thus to verify them! She reveals the evidence unearthed - reproducing key documents so the reader can assess them for themselves. This is explosive material. In the final part of this book the author reports recent research that is revolutionising biology and offering much hope for the future. These new developments shed new light on the relationships between our cells and viruses. They are not necessarily enemies. Readers may find these new developments radically change the ideas they have held about viruses since childhood. This book goes deep into the historical record to uncover one of the greatest frauds of the 20th century. Viruses are not what people think they are. They are a smokescreen for toxicity. Roberts goes through the history of polio, hiv and more to uncover the way government and industry science work together to confuse the public and even most scientists and science students.

She cites her work extensively. Everything she discusses is from the legit historical record. She pours through the letters, the rough drafts, the memos, the back pages of old newspapers, etc. She uncovers the compromises, the guesses, the outright lies.

You will never see viruses, disease or government science the same after reading this book. And your health will benefit for it.
