Not everything can be explained in one Shakespeare book

I read the sections of this book in four separate chapters that were circulated privately, having received them from friends who recommended them. Now they are published in book form, and it seems that many more people will have the chance to get this perspective on Shakespeare. But - Shakespeare for the Seeker? Seeking what? Seeking the real Shakespeare? Seeking some inner truth? What exactly?

Shakespeare, for me, has always been a challenge to understand in a comprehensive way. Parts are historical, parts are psychological, etc. and can be very satisfying in these ways. But why these themes, why are those particular historical scenarios so important? Evidently people over all these centuries have been entertained and fascinated. My cousin, the "Shakespeare Man" at a large New England university, made a decent living trying to figure all this out, as have thousands of others. Still, really, you have to ask why these plays have lasted so long and continued to interest so many people?

The author seems to claim that the plays, taken together, explain the progress of the human race. Progress? But the plays are about tragedies, wars, dishonesty, betrayals. Can this tell us anything about a progression of thought and development of the Western mind from Greek and Roman times, through the middle ages? This is way outside of anything even remotely suggested in the college courses I took. Besides, I had assumed that if, in fact, humans had made any real progress during that time, it would be explained to us by anthropologists or neuropsychologists, not a playwright scrounging for a living in 1600s England. Generally, when I read Shakespeare or see a play, I can't help thinking that the plots and characters are mired in the same short-sighted and emotional turmoil people experience today. How is this progress?

In the book, the material is laid out in a matter-of-fact way that, thankfully, does not remind me of how my professors talked. Even the plays I had never read were well-enough summarized that I could follow. It was relatively easy to adopt the author's point of view long enough to see the connections he is making between characters and between plays. Surprisingly, a new and rather exciting interpretation emerges. What had seemed to me like short-sighted and emotional turmoil turned out to be more my own habits of thought than the actual storyline.

For this skillful presentation I give him credit. I put only 4 stars because the author never fully explains exactly what he means by human development. And he is not a well-known Shakespeare expert so we never learn where these intriguing ideas came from. Well, I suppose, not everything can be explained in one book.

Essential reading for those interested in the evolution of consciousness

Shakespeare for the Seeker is a four volume series in four books; this review then, covers the whole series.

In his Introduction, the author, Wes Jamroz states:

'One of the functions of spiritual teaching is to project into the world of ordinary senses examples which parallel events from a higher realm. Shakespeare's plays are an example of such a projection.'

These books are an exposition of Shakespeare like no other I have read. The author examines and explains a dimension to the works of Shakespeare that is totally different to the usual scholastic analysis and interpretation and the seemingly endless debate about who Shakespeare was and if he is the 'real' author of the plays and sonnets. I have previously read hints of an inner meaning within the Shakespearian works by the author Idries Shah in several of his books and in Ernest Scott's 'The People of the Secret' and I am extremely grateful to Wes Jamroz for these books.

The plays, using symbolism, allegory and structure, detail the evolutionary sequences happening in Western Europe leading up to the 17th Century, the time of Elizabeth 1, when the plays were being released and performed. The author notes that in the 1960's a new phase of spiritual teaching was initiated and that the Shakespearian Corpus is entirely relevant to this new phase.

I do not intend to present a detailed review of the books' contents as those contents speak for themselves. I have no doubt that those who specifically seek scholarly and literary analysis will find little here to satisfy themselves with but, if you are open-minded or with an interest in the Destiny of Humankind and the possibilities of the evolution of individual, societal and global consciousness, these books will be seen as a major contribution. I absolutely recommend these books.

the story seemed like something I would enjoy and it was only a ...

I have been wanting to try audiobooks for a while now, and this was my first choice. I got it free from Audible, the story seemed like something I would enjoy and it was only a little half an hour long, so why not?

I can tell why people say the narrator is very important to the enjoyment of an audiobook. Since I have no basis of comparison, I cannot tell if Ms Melody Grove is considered a good one or not, but I enjoyed it. Her voice was soothing and I could tell when the voices changed and the emotion behind the characters' lines. So yes, I think I chose a good one to start with!

I have to admit I don't find it as easy remembering things to write a proper review later on, though. I remember I thought it was interesting that Lalla, our main character, would realize there are differences between history and stories, which is to say from truth and make believe. Her mother told her many marvelous things, but not all of them were true, or so she thought. Kind of like finding out there is no Santa.

So 11 year old Lalla is our narrator, and she lives in a post-apocalyptic London, where an event called the Collapse had taken place and left people extremely poor, at the mercy of a seemingly ruthless government.

The world creation appears interesting, though I could not tell what exactly had happened. The story is faithful to what an 11 year old would say and think, but at times it does not serve too well to set context. For instance, we are told that Lalla's father goes away a lot, but not why. I could only tell that people were extremely poor and that some could live in flats, like Lalla's family. But I could not figure out if they had jobs, for example. Other things I collected from the story was that there were no children around, and that everyone's main focus was to make sure they renewed their requests to get food and that they always carried their id cards or they would be shot by the armed forces.

I especially could not figure out how computers seemed to run fairly efficiently in a world where so much seemed to have been wiped out. Even though I kept in mind that this story is a prequel to The Ship, I could have used a bit more information. But I guess that will have to wait.

As the story progresses, we find that little Lalla is tired of having no one to play with, and wants to move to Regents Park after watching a movie about it showing all kinds of wonders. You can tell there's something fishy about it, especially when Lalla's parents vehemently tell her she cannot go there, though offering no explanation. But you can tell why it would be so appealing to Lalla. And here the narrator is able to convey her emotions quite well. Lalla will do something silly as all kids must, and it will pique the reader/listener's interest to find out more about this world, which is the job of a prequel, I suppose.

I guess this story had the opposite effect on me though, since I feel that if I had read The Ship and had more context I would have perhaps appreciated it more, and it would have served to complement an already well established concept.
It's still an enjoyable listen and I recommend it.

*Audiobook Review-

The Time Being by Antonia Honeywell is a short story.

Here's a dystopian tale, set in the UK. It's about a world where food and other necessities are delivered into the center of town- and you can't have any unless you have a card. You can't go anyplace without this card because the world is under a type of martial law.

This card could also grants little girl, 12-years old Lalla, access to Regent's Park- a place wheel children play in playgrounds in London, music and food a plenty. But her parents tell her it's not real. The place shown on the large screens, supplied by the military, is not real. But she doesn't believe.

This broken society is nothing like the London we know of. The world is cruel and Lalla's parents want her to be satisfied with her like right now. To be satisfied with her life for the time being. To trust her parents and what they say and to never run away again...

Standard whoops what did my wife do. Story line very good. Work up and back ground very good. Lots of descriptive action "EDGE OF SEAT" leaves the chance of a repeat with the same characters different party. Blackmail????.

About the Author
Henry Tosi is currently the McGriff Professor of Management Emeritus at the University of Florida. He received his Ph.D. from the Ohio State University in 1964. Before coming to Gainesville, he was on the faculty at Michigan State University and the University of Maryland. He has been a visiting faculty member at the University of California-Irvine, Emory University, Cornell University in the United States. He also has held visiting appointments at Luigi Bocconi University (Milan, Italy), L.U.I.S.S. (Rome, Italy), the University of Catania in Sicily, and the University of Modena (Modena, Italy). He has been the President of the Midwest Division of the Academy of Management, a founding member of the Organizational Behavior Division and the Research Methods Division of the Academy of Management, as well as serving on the Board of Governors. In addition, he has served on the editorial review boards of Administrative Science Quarterly, Journal of Business Research, and The Academy of Management Review. Along with Bernard Bass and Robert House, he is a founding editor of The Leadership Quarterly. His research has covered a range of diverse topics. His work on Management by Objectives was among the first serious research studies on the role of goals and goal setting in organizations. His most recent work has been on C.E.O. compensation issues and organizational control. His scholarly papers have appeared in The Academy of Management Journal, The Academy of Management Review, Administrative Science Quarterly, Personnel Psychology, The Journal of Applied Psychology, The Journal of Business, Human Relations, Business Horizons, and The California Management Review.

This might be a good compilation of various theories or organization, but it is one of the most dry textbooks I have ever read. I find myself re-reading almost every sentence, wondering what meaning the author is trying to convey.
