Jodie Moule is co-founder & director of Symplicit, an experience design consultancy based in Australia that focuses on research, strategy and design services. Her background as a psychologist means understanding human behavior is a core philosophy, and she has a passion for helping clients to see their brands through the eyes of their customers. She is also interested in how to combine this understanding of human behavior with good design thinking, to influence the way businesses approach the design of their products, systems and processes.

Understand the audience before you purchase

I see other reviewers have already made my main complaint about this book. For a book that is supposed to focus on the User Experience in an authoritative manner, I find the titles and sub-titles very misleading... which leads to a bad user experience.

"Killer UX Design", "Wow your visitors", "The Complete Guide to Creating Compelling User-Centered Designs"

As a UI developer associated with a UX team, I think I understand the difference between UI and UX - with UI being one element of the broader UX, yet the way this book was named and presented led me to believe there would be a lot more focus on cool, modern UI concepts. In reality, while the case study UI is interesting, it's not ground-breaking, and makes up a very small portion of the book.

This is really a book about the UX design PROCESS, and the months of research done prior to doing any kind of UI or development. It is NOT a book about UI. There is not much here for the typical garage developer (although there are some very good nuggets of information to absorb).

However, if your team is robust enough to take on the discipline of formal up-front design, complete with methodologies for user testing, focus groups, market research, and all the rest, then this book is gold... well written, and full of great information.

So, for the right audience, this book earns a 4, or even 5 star rating. Had the name and descriptions properly reflected its true audience, I would happily give it the 4 or 5 star rating, but for the average developer, who might get excited by the title of this book, be warned that this probably isn't what you're looking for. So, based on my unexpected "user experience", I can't really justify more than a 3.

Introductory book; Clearly written.

Should be titled "Introduction to UX Research and Design Processes for Designers". "Killer UX Design" is hyped title. Begins with clear explanations on the necessity for collecting customers' needs information and goals, and takes the reader through the design process, always emphasizing the objectives of the initial collected information and goals. Written for designers to help them understand the business goals and the design process; not as much on the design itself. Very clearly written!

The problem with reviewing books of this nature is that it's purely subjective to the reader's experience.

I found the title, KILLER UX DESIGN, to be misleading. To me, "KILLER UX DESIGN" implies advanced techniques, processes and future UX trends. Instead, I got basic advice on how important it is to have meetings and case studies that discuss UX needs and advice to "Get My Stationary On." Hmm ... this strikes me as very fundamental--not "killer."

That's not to say there isn't useful information to be found here. In fact, if you're new to UX concepts and preparation, then this is actually a great starting place and very much on par with the "For Dummies" series in terms of comprehension. If you've been doing this for a while and you're looking for "killer" concepts, then you may find this reference to be as lackluster as I did.

Pravda (which means "truth") is a satire written at the height of Thatcherism when huge political changes were afoot. The play essentially studies, through black humour and close scrutiny, the tabloid ethic and the media industry as a get-rich-quick-fix.

In the programme for the original 1985 production of Pravda, Brenton wrote: "Pravda means 'the truth'. English newspapers aren't propaganda sheets. The question is, why do so many of them choose to behave as if they are?"

The character of Lambert Le Roux is a South African newspaper tycoon and the owner of several companies, striding his way through the regional papers en route to Fleet Street. Turning broadsheets tabloid, dumbing down the message, and stretching the truth, Le Roux takes no prisoners as he manipulates politicians and creates a media monopoly out of a once-respected industry.

Le Roux is bent on dominating England's press as he has elsewhere in the world. As we see Le Roux accomplish his aims, we see also how the press is not the organ of truth we like to think it is. The dissemination of the truth is no longer its primary goal under the 'Lambert Le Rouxs' of our world. What is important now is what sells.

The play is an epic satire on the media in the Thatcher era; a morality tale about how Andrew, a young liberal journalist, finally succumbs to Le Roux, who makes him editor of a tabloid; and - allegedly - the play is a direct representation of Rupert Murdoch who, even in 1985, was a major force in media ownership.

Howard Brenton's and David Hare's first collaboration since Brassneck in 1973, Pravda was premiered at the National Theatre in May 1985, starring Anthony Hopkins and directed by David Hare, and was awarded the London Standard Best Play Award, the City Limits Best Play Award, and the Plays and Players Best Play Award.

This Modern Classics edition features an introduction by Philip Roberts, Emeritus Professor of Drama and Theatre Studies at the University of Leeds, and a foreword by Jonathan Church.

About the Author

Howard Brenton is a British dramatist, noted for his controversial political plays of the 1970s and 80s. He became resident dramatist at the Royal Court in 1972, following on from David Hare. His plays include Revenge, Brassneck (a colloboration with David Hare), The Churchill Play, Epsom Downs, The Romans in Britain, Pravda (also a collaboration with Hare), Berlin Bertie, Paul, Never So Good, and In Extremis. He also wrote the TV programme Spooks and has translated many plays into English. In 2011 he won a Theatregoers' Choice Award for Best Play for Anne Boleyn.

Sir David Hare is a British playwright and director, noted for his critical examination of post-war British society. In 1968 he became a founder of the travelling fringe company, Portable Theatre, which performed some of his early plays. The following year he became resident playwright at the Royal Court Theatre, before being made resident playwright at the Nottingham Theatre in 1973. In 1974 he co-founded the Joint Stock Company. His plays include Slag, Brassneck, Fanshen, Pravda, Racing Demon, Murmuring Judges, The Absence of War, Amy's View, Via Dolorosa, The Permanent Way, Stuff Happens, The Vertical Hour, The Power of Yes, Berlin and Wall. He was knighted in 1998.

A cynical view of the world of modern journalism

Although littered with 80's references which may trip up the reader at first, Pravda is the tale of an honest journalist who see's his profession debased through the growth of tabloids, the sensational shocking headlines and the British public's lust for sex, royalty and nationalism. Into this arena walks La Roux, cunning, devious and calculating, a very thinly veiled Murdoch his personality turns everyone towards him, controlling the worlds of royalty, sports, politics and at the end the world of journalism, forcing even the "hero" of the book to give up his honest journalistic instincts and start calling for smut.

A tense and thoughtful coming-of-age story

With LIFE BEFORE, Michele Bacon has created a thoughtful and stirring portrait of a boy forced to grow up practically overnight. When his dark past erupts into tragedy, Xander Fife must leave behind his friends, his hometown, and everything he knows, and go on the run; flinging himself headlong into what he first views as a terrible limbo - a meager and fugitive existence eked out in fits and starts as he waits for a dangerous situation to resolve itself - he soon discovers things about life, and about himself, that he never knew before.

Xander undergoes some very painful evolution over the course of this novel. He has a believably complex relationship with his mother - whom he both loves and sometimes resents - and a realistic (if sometimes unfair) attitude towards her failings as a protector during the years when the pair of them suffered domestic abuse at the hands of Gary, Xander's father. These are heavy and complicated subjects, and Bacon does a wonderful job of not trying to water them down or candy-coat them for easier digestion. Equally impressive is the way in which she shows how a boy who has learned too much too early about self-reliance can still be completely at sea when forced to fend entirely for himself.

The friendships that Xander makes while in his self-imposed exile are developed beautifully, and each character he encounters feels whole, satisfying, and important. Based on the brief description of the novel, I think I expected the plot to be somewhat explosive, and was surprised to find that it was remarkably subtle instead - filled with small moments and quiet shifts in Xander's emotional journey that are movingly profound and life-changing. There's a lot of sadness here, but a lot of optimism as well, and I'm impressed by how well Bacon has balanced the two.

This book has it all; adventure, suspense, drama, and a great deal of heart. In this modern coming of age story, 17-year-old Alexander (Zander) Fife is intent on graduating high school and going off to college so that his real life can finally "begin." Zander's violent, abusive father has his own plans, though. Zander finds himself on the run and on his own for the first time.

Bacon does any amazing job navigating the emotional turmoil experienced by children who grow up in violent homes. Zander's guilt, embarrassment, and fear are palpable as are his hopes for a better life. You will find yourself pulling for Zander and all of the other children and teens with similar stories. Bravo!

This is a great book. Kids in abusive families are often forced to grow up before they should have to, but for Xander, the biggest change in his life comes in one harrowing moment. It's enough to make him give up everything, and watching that happen--reading this book--is really difficult at times. That's because his character is so well-drawn and realistic, as are the rest of the characters and the world around him. Xander has to figure out how to survive on his own, and the story of how he does that is really compelling.

Worth The Read

For people aspiring success in the competitive world of luxury branding and marketing, Lifestyle Brands: A Guide to Aspirational Marketing by Stefania Saviolo and Antonio Marazza is the tool to begin. Unsurprisingly, I found that several of the concepts of the book are shallow and materialistic, but if one is going into a purely materialized field, one should not expect anything else. I did enjoy the conversational style that the authors used, making the book easier to get through and have less of a monotonous, textbook feel. Visuals are appropriately placed throughout the book, adding an aid to visually comprehend theories. Specific examples of brands are broken down and usually elongated into entire sections and chapters; some could have perhaps been shortened, but they are all helpful nonetheless. The book is a sufficient step to lead readers in the right direction of understanding the psychology and creation behind iconic brands.
Lifestyle Brands gives memorable and thought-provoking quotes and teachings in its mere 130 pages; any more pages and the book would have been excessive and overdone. The general idea of the book is to have the audience understand that what consumers appreciate is “symbolic value” (Saviolo, Marazza, xi). The product being marketed is more about the lifestyle, status, and value than the tangible product itself. It is touched upon that “researchers define certain brands as magnetic: brands capable of engaging, of proposing an original point of view and of influencing a social context” (Saviolo, Marazza, 1). The book discusses how brands can reel in their consumers by relating their product to emotional ties or simply what is “in.” Although some of the points discussed are self-explanatory and sometimes repetitive, the information is useful for complete newcomers to the marketing field.
The book is of a specified topic, so it is clear that only people hoping for careers in luxury marketing are its audience; it would not be a read for pleasure. Readers have to not mind a somewhat boasting and self-centered attitude. A few quotes could be interpreted as either frank and blatant or immoral, such as, “we go after the attractive all-American kid with a great attitude and a lot of friends. A lot of people don’t belong, and they can’t belong. Are we exclusionary? Absolutely.” (Saviolo, Marazza, 67). Constant reminders in the book about favoring the beautiful and “cool” can easily be seen as overbearing, despite the valuable theories between the lines. While reading, it was sometimes difficult to decipher between if the author was self-obsessed or just trying to prepare a striving marketing maven for the reality of the business.
Overall, I would recommend the book to fellow classmates interested in the luxury market. It was influential and a reality-check. A less arrogant tone could have been used, but the lessons were essential enough to overlook it. The intended audience was certainly reached and engaged, and the amount of credible sources and merits referenced to were noteworthy. Chapters were complete with useful and readable graphs supporting the arguments made, such as a map of the overlapping of symbol intensive brands and a graph of the types of benefits given by differing brands. The authors may have been a little biased towards the “ideal” consumer of luxury goods, but that is understandable for one in the business. The evidence backing statements is unbiased and reliable, improving my faith in the book.

I am so glad that I bought this book. I was planning to Trek in Nepal. I did not realize how extensive the earthquake damage was. The book clearly states which trails and which areas were affected by the earthquake.
