About the Author
Born and raised in New York, Ariel Bar Tzadok studied in Jerusalem under many of the finest Sephardi Kabbalists of the previous generation. In June 1983, Rabbi Bar Tzadok received his Rabbinic ordination from Rabbi Ya aqob Peretz, Rosh Yeshiva of Kollel Hekhal Pinhas. While studying at Hekhal Pinhas, Rabbi Bar Tzadok was blessed by Heaven to become the private student of the renown Kabbalist, Rabbi Meir Levi zt l, the foremost student of the Head Kabbalist of Jerusalem, Rabbi Mordechai Sharabi zt l. The Rav officially established his Yeshiva in 1992 to address the growing concerns of spiritual misguidance and misinformation that is pervasive in the Jewish community at large. The Yeshiva has since grown, to include a Collel for the private study of Kabbalah. Students around the world access the Rav s teachings through his website www.koshertorah.com. Rabbi Bar Tzadok s essays have appeared in numerous newspapers. He has spoken on numerous radio talk shows. He has spoken at synagogues, yeshivot and university groups. This Is The Real Thing, Folks

If you want true JEWISH Kabbalah, this is it. It doesn't get any more authentic than this. Rav Ariel Bar Tzadok is eminently qualified to teach this subject, having been a student of the mekubalim (kabbalaists)in Israel and elsewhere in a long tradition going back to such luminaries as the Arizal and the Rashash.

I was puzzled as to why there were so many small typos, however. Nothing that takes away from the ancient texts, which Rav Bar Tzadok has thankfully photocopied (in the original Hebrew), but the English translations and explanations have quite a few editing errors. "To" instead of "two" for example, missing words, mispelled words, etc. These are frequent enough throughout the book that it can jar the reader "out" of the meditative state briefly.

Perhaps there will someday be a second edition of this work with a more thorough editing job.

All in all, it's a fantastic, amazing book, NOT to be missed. There is no where else in one place for the English reader to find all of these ancient Jewish texts, prayers, meditations, segulot, etc. from the TRUE ancient Jewish Kabbalists. This book is invaluable, a priceless treasure. Rav Bar Tzadok doesn't just reproduce the ancient texts here, he translates them AND teaches how to properly make use of them as well. The Rav has done a beautiful kiddush HaShem and the entire world a GREAT service by publishing and translating these ancient Jewish works. May it reach all those who would make proper use of it for its purpose.

Great Book - loaded with accurate insights into Kabballah

This is a great book for both the student and the advanced Kabbalist.
It is packed with insights into the methodolgy of Kabbalah study and practice.
All of the teachings are Kosher in that they are in line with orthodox jewish thought, and the Rambam's 13 principles of faith. The author emulates the Rambam and Abulafia by integrating science and Kabbalah for a unified description of our world and the other dimensions. If you are looking to understand real Kabballah, this is the book.
The more knowledge you have of Kabballah before reading this book, the more you will
appreciate the depth of this work.

Fantastic Book

I was surprised to see that this had such a low rating because it's one of the best books I have found on Kabbalah in English. It's a shame that one review can bring the rating down so far, but that's the way the system works. Anyways, I ordered this because it is the **ONLY** book in English to provide this version of the Goralot, which is different from the Providence Press translation of Sefer ha-Goralot (of the two I prefer this one). But this book also has so much more besides that. With so few quality books of kabbalah in English, this stands out as uniquely powerful and *authentic*. Highly recommended.

Tried & True Comfort, Affirmation & Wisdom

I ran across these little Elf-Help books years ago. The simple wisdom given in pithy one or two sentence bites, got me through some tough times. I took the books walking with me. I would read a page, then walk and reflect on the thought as I went. Now, all these years later, the thoughts come to mind just when I need them. This one by Cherry Hartman is probably my favorite, but I love them all. I give them to others from time to time if I think they would be helpful.

You need to have this book!

I first heard about this book when I received it as a gift in college over 10 years ago. I still have it and still refer to it now and then for its wonderful and simple gems of wisdom. It's a great little book to have for yourself and would make a great pick-me-up for a friend going through a hard time. Its message is simply to listen to your heart and take care of your needs. The little elf illustrations are very poignant and marry well with the text as an encouragement for your soul. I would recommend this and any of the Elf Help books to anyone!

Worst Guide Book to the Philippines !!!

Im an Australian living fulltime in the Philippines and travel extensively as I'm a realtor selling islands & beaches here. Do not waste your money buying this book. Firstly, it is a second rate copy of the previous editions written by Jen Peters. You are better of buying his "Philippines Travel Guide" also available on Amazon.
Secondly, its full of so many errors and danger warnings that I'm suprised anybody would come here if it were really true. For instance they write that Palawan is dangerous based upon a bomb being found at the airport. The bomb was in fact a defunct WWII hand grenade which was found in the grass at the edge of the runway, hardly something designed to kill tourists. It warnings about danger in Palawan are COMPLETELY wrong in every instance. I live there and crime and danger are almost non-existant. Yes the Abu Sayeff kidnapped people from a resort, but they were from Mindanao on the other extreme of the Philippines and there has not been 1 single incident since then .. 5 YEARS AGO!
El Nido, one of the best places in the Philippines see EL-NIDO.NET The authors came for 1 day and how can the possibly have researched a whole town in 1 day? The write that the trip from Puerto to El Nido by road is 14 hours, when in fact it is now only 7 hours and half of that on the new concrete highway.
Yes, there are dangers in the Philippines, but I feel safer here than living in any western city. Provided that you follow common sense you wont have any trouble here. This is one of the most under-rated tourism spots on the globe, exactly because of lame travel books and stupid travel advisories from overseas embassies.
Do yourself a favour buy the Jens Peters Guide and ignore whatever the Lonely Planet Guide says.

Does not live up to the Lonely Planet standard

I love Lonely Planet travel guides. The pithy been-there-done-that tone and insider information is invaluable. Every where I travel, I take along an LP guide. My recent trip to the Philippines was no different, but I cannot recommend this travel guide to anyone. The LP Philippines guide simply does not live up to the standard.

The historical information is biased and slightly anti-American. The authors go out of their way to make anti-American comments throughout the historical section, while saying little or nothing about the historical atrocities committed by other nations in the Philippines (Japanese death march anyone?). The authors clearly feel that is their duty to inform the world that the United States is an empire building, bumbling, inept nation. I found the condescending tone and political prejudices personally offensive.

Secondly, I felt like the guide was written like a research report. There is so much that isn't reflected in the guide. We hired a taxi or van (with the driver) for about 2,000 pesos and hit all the tourist areas for the entire a day, in Bohol, Cebu, and Davao (note: it is expected you feed the driver and he eats with you or at another table). Depending on how you negotiate, the rate can go as high as 5,000 per day for an air conditioned van and driver. This guide would have you waiting for taxi's or navigating Jeepney routes all day.

In general, the travel information is adequate for the northern islands, with some notable exceptions. If you plan on visiting Mindanao, find another travel guide entirely. The authors are simply ignorant of the political situation in the Philippines, and the section on Mindanao is filled with inaccurate travel warnings.

The information about Mindanao and Davao are almost non-existent. If you are going to visit Mindanao, I would urge you to get another travel guide. After spending time in and around Davao, I began to wonder if any of the authors actually visited Davao, or did their exploration over the telephone.

The information in Manila is incomplete. I was amazed at how little information was available on a modern city of that size.

Surprisingly, the information about Cebu and Bohol, was more or less correct, but the price information was totally out of whack on panglao island on some of the resort hotels.

I was recently in Indonesia for several months for work, and I could not thank Lonely Planet enough for a wonderful job that is the Indonesia guidebook, which we referred to as The Bible in the course of our travel. When I came back home, I bought the Philippines guidebook because I was curious how they did it. I was so disappointed! The inaccuracies and omissions were horrible. One appalling omission: arguably the Philippines biggest and most colorful festival, the annual Sinulog in Cebu, is nowhere mentioned in the book. (I'm telling you guys planning to go the Philippines, this book could have been a lot thicker). And the worst part of reading this guidebook, you get the sense that as if the writers hacked their way through the archipelago to write this. Unlike in the Indonesia book wherein the writers sound like they truly loved the places they covered and have in fact spent some time in the places to be able to write about them accurately, in the Philippines guidebook it seemed that they finished it just to get over it, without passion and care. (Although I have to admit, Manila was amply covered). I suggest you still get this book for some practical tips, but for the attractions themselves, you could visit the website of the Philippine Department of Tourism ([...]) to complement what's written in this book.

Listening in the Language Classroom

I think this book is useful in that it provides insights into the current teaching approaches in the L2 listening classroom. It compares the differences of language processing between L1 and L2 listeners --- how they decode, link to their schemata, use grammar, amplify what the speaker says and handle information etc. It is consequently useful to L2 listening researchers because it releases incoming information not only about the author --- Dr. John Field, but also other wellknown scholars in the circle.
The book also provides criteria of listening difficulty and detailed teaching techniques that L2 listening teachers can apply in their language classroom. It is a practical book.

It started a little slow for me - preaching to the choir about the current state of teaching listening. However, the ideas, activities, and citations throughout are extremely informative. I am in the midst of revamping a speaking/listening course for advanced English learners and have found this book invaluable.

This book was published for the first time in 1973. Second revised and enlarged edition appeared in 1977. Now we welcome the third edition of this classic book in classical model theory... The novelties of the third edition are these: a section on recursively saturated models, a section on Lindstr�m's characterization of first order logic, a more extensive treatment of model-completeness and a section on nonstandard universes.

A good book, but a little outdated.

This book was for a while the classic text in model theory, and it still is a good resource for a student in the area. This was the first model theory text I read, and I've always found the proofs to be clear, straightforward, and easy to read. I came with some background in logic, but Chapter 1 covers all the basic logic you need for this book. Chapters 2, 3, 4.1, and 5.1 are still proably as good a place as any to learn the essential core material of the subject.
My biggest reservation about recommending this book is that it was first written in 1973, and it shows. Although this is the third edition of the book, its original structure is still largely the same. The field of model theory has changed a lot since the early 70's. For instance, in 1978 Shelah wrote a famous book that simultaneously answered many open questions in model theory and changed the direction of the whole subject, and the 1990's have seen many new applications to algebra and other areas of pure math. However, these important developments aren't reflected much in this book. The new sections added to this edition aren't exactly on the cutting edge: "Lindstrom's charaterization of first-order logic" was known at least since the early 1980's, and represents a line of research that doesn't seem to have much to do with model theory today; model completeness and nonstandard universes were studied a lot by Abraham Robinson and his colleages -- in the 1950's and 1960's.
Why is it so important to have an up-to-date textbook, since the theorems in this book are surely no less true now than 30 years ago? A really good book should give the student an idea of the current state of the subject, and this book does not. If you only read this book you might think that model theorists were still preoccupied with proving two-cardinal theorems. (Though if for some reason you really like two-cardinal theorems, then this is the book for you!) Here's some other introductory model theory books written from a modern point of view:
Hodges, _A Shorter Model Theory_
Poizat, _A Course in Model Theory_
Marker, _Model Theory: An Introduction_
I've looked at the first two, and they both seem like they would be good books for a beginner. All three of the books cover essentially all the material in Chang and Keisler, except some advanced topics on ultraproducts -- but for almost all applications you don't need ultraproducts anyway, just compactness. All three books also have more emphasis on applications to other areas of math. The last two books contain some more advanced material on stability theory as well.
One final word on the exercises in Chang and Keisler: in response to other reviewers' comments, I think they are comparable in difficulty to the exercises in most other advanced undergrad or beginning grad level math books I've seen. There are a lot of routine exercises, and also a decent number of slightly tricky exercises. And a few are really hard -- some of the double-starred problems are the topics of research papers! But you can just skip these ones.

A Still "Hot" Old Standard

Although I am loathe to admit it, I used this book in an undergraduate non-standard analysis seminar over 20 years ago -- it would, therefore, not be surprising if the commentary that it is a bit dated is apt. Chang and Kiesler were, however, big names in the field, and at the time I took the class, this book was one of the few that felt like a textbook. I also remember it as being relatively easy to read. This may have been why, at the time, it was chronically missing from the shelves of our math library -- not checked out, but simply missing. On a recent visit to the same library, the librarian actually remembered the class and that it had used this book -- when he went to locate it on the shelf, it was missing -- he told me that to this day, it is one of the books that routinely disappears from the shelves (as my contribution to the advancement of Foundations, I recently bought a copy to donate to that library -- or perhaps to some impoverished proto-model theorist). This continuing phenomonon of disappearance I take as a continuing tribute and testament to the utility of the text as an introduction.

An important book

This book is the only good source that I've found for the applications of model theory in set theory. Model theorists were more interested in those things back then, I guess. Anyway if you want to know about direct limits and ultraproducts (key constructions in set theory), this is the book to buy. It may interest the logician to know that A Shorter Model Theory doesn't even mention direct limits, which are important to use in understanding the consequences of V=L, especially.

One that caused me to lose sleep ...

This is the story of four women who graduated from the same small, liberal arts college in North Carolina in the early 1980s. The women are all very different and yet have a bond that seems to hold them together even when circumstances should tear them apart. The book moves between their college years and 2005 when they all get together for the first time after college at the luxurious beach-front cottage owned by one of the women's husbands.

I was expecting a light, fun summer read along the lines of a Debbie Macomber book but it is much, much more complex and much deeper than that. The characters are well developed and are dealing with the life choices they have made and where those have lead them. Unfortunately, I actually didn't get enough sleep a couple of nights because I couldn't put the book down and turn out the light. This author really knows how to tell a story ! Great writing and some very insightful portions. Each character is three-dimensional with flaws and strenghts exposed -- I came to care about them all.

I will definitely be seeking out other books by this author and will be recommending this book to friends.

Can you go home again?

One of the challenges of friendship is if it can weather and survive the things life throws at it through the years. Mel, Sara, Annie and Lola became friends at their small, private, all girls' school in the early 80s. They've managed to at least stay in touch with one another and now find themselves in their 40s - the kids are growing up or have already left the nest, some men have come and gone, careers have waxed and waned, and each woman has significant questions about the next stage of her life.

Lola, the starry-eyed waif who married an ogre with more money and power than compassion and humanity, invites her friends to spend a week with her at her new beach "cottage" on Whale Head Island in North Carolina. Successful, single, more-mouth-than-sense Mel flies in from New York. She's between novels and trying to figure out where her life is going. Sensible, OCD, prudish Annie joins the group, knowing she's going to let them talk her into doing something she doesn't want to do. And Sara, smart and beautiful with what others think is the perfect family, relunctantly accepts the invitation even though she and Mel have, at best, had a rocky relationship over the last several years. Each woman has her own private pain, and there are secrets and guilt galore in this friendship.

What do women with too many responsibilities and too few chances to let their hair down do for a week at a beautiful, remote beach home? Why, they do what any sensible group of girlfriends would do in that situation - they fire up the blender, pour the drinks, let go of some inhibitions, and open up for some long overdue soul searching.

There's a slew of "southern sisterhood" novels out there. Some are quite good, and some leave a lot to be desired. On the surface, Beach Trip looks like a fluffy, these-strong-women-still-need-a-man type of book. Don't be taken in by the stereotype of what tends to be termed women's literature these days. Beach Trip is thoughtful and funny and manages to be entertaining while delivering some pretty good insights into the hearts and souls of its main characters. Given the title, it's inevitable that this book will be labeled as a beach or summer read, and I admit that I finished it on a sunny day, lounging on the deck with the wind rustling through the trees. But this is simply a darned good book. It was at times a bit too close to comfort to some of the same issues my close friends and I have gone through over the years (minus the expensive beach home and amenities!). I think most women will find something they can relate to in these pages, and I see this book becoming the hit of bookclubs in the next few months.

Substance Outshines Frothy Title

The strength in this novel was the characters' ability to stretch and rearrange the truth. Meet Mel, Sara, Annie and Lola, women in their 40's who plan a reunion at Lola's luxurious North Carolina beach house. They are graduates of a prominent liberal arts college in the 1980's which sets the tone that readers will be privy to the lives of educated, complex women.

Holton moves us back and forth from the 1980's to the present 2005. These are southern women with diverse backgrounds: Mel is wealthy, beautiful and can commit to friendship, not marriage. She is a succesful mystery writer who comes off as a harsh critic of her friends and their life decisions. Sara is beautiful, an attorney with solid parents, but appears to be consumed by guilt. Annie, the weakest character, had a discretion during their "carefree" college days which she cannot seem to absolve herself. And Lola, beautiful Lola, with the traditional southern mother who only cared about tradition foisting her daughter into a troubled adulthood.

In an attempt to reconcile their lives, they spend days together unraveling their past and connecting it to the present. Holton's flashback to the womens' southern upbringing gave me the strongest insight to interpret the present. Holton showed off her solid southern writing when she wrote of the past. I believe the plot was weaker during the day to day activities of the reunion. There is a great, satisfying twist at the end, and I was assured that Holton's theme of strong women was justified. The title, "Beach Trip" suggest a chick lit superficial story. It is not. The title should have been more representative of the comedic and literary talents of this writer.

About the Author
George Jonas was born in Budapest, Hungary, in 1935. Following the Hungarian uprising of 1956, he emigrated to Canada. In addition to fourteen books, three of which have become national and international bestsellers, Jonas has written for The Wall Street Journal, The Chicago Sun-Times, and other publications. In 1978, he won the Edgar Allan Poe Award for Best True Crime.

Author is honest

I really enjoyed this book. It was well paced throughout. After reading quite a few "non-fiction" spy books, to me Vengeance has the ring of truth to it, reminding me more of the Falcon and the Snowman than Vise's The Bureau and the Mole.

I had the luxury of reading Vengeance when it first came out, and reread it after viewing the movie Munich, of which this book was the primary source.

Our "hero" Anver, was a Mossad agent who was asked to leave the agency by Golda Meir, the Prime Minister of Israel, to lead a team of men. This team was to attempt to take the lives of 11 men who were responsible for the Black September terrorist group's act of killing Israeli athletes at the Munich Olympics.

The book follows the freelance team during their strong, early times, and their weak moments, both personal and professional. We meet not only the team, but also their sources, who are also personalized.

Although the author had to rely on a single source for some sections of the book, he is honest about this. When there are questions about his interpretation, he explains the different theories in the footnotes.

I bumped my review from 4 stars to 5 because of the "Notes on a Controversy" and footnotes that follow the main text in this volume. Questions raised about the author's perspective and sources are answered well in these two sections. I found Jonas to be honest about relying on his source. He also debates articles that attacked his book with his perspective without name calling.

Fascinating and well-written...

This is one of those books that leaves you wondering, on several levels, about its contents. I don't think this is bad: actually, since it gets you thinking about the issues involved, I think it's a good thing. Vengeance purports to recount the efforts of a group of Israelis sent by the Mossad to Europe to kill various PLO figures who had aided, supported, planned, or otherwise enabled the 1972 Munich massacre of the Israeli Olympic team. The whole book apparently, at the time, raised a considerable controversy: many of the events in the story are uncorroborated, and of course this would lead to some readers being skeptical.

On the other hand, this book represents the sort of thing you'd expect would happen. We know the Israelis at least tried such operations: the killing of a Morrocan waiter in Lillehammer Norway was certainly an attempt to kill one of the PLO's top guys, and some of the supporting Mossad operatives were caught, tried, convicted, and sentenced to jail for their part in the plot. The whole thing sounds believable, down to the team having specialists for various aspects of operations in Europe, to their using small pistols because of the lack of loud noise (.22s with reduced powder for even less noise), the bombs that don't work exactly as planned, and the lack of exact information as to who was behind the retaliation once it began.

This book reads as a spy novel, and perhaps should be read at least partially as if it is one. After all, does anyone think that the writings of John Le Carre are completely fictional. He was, for a short time anyway, in the intelligence community, as were Graham Greene and Frederick Forsyth. You have to think that those authors include things from their own experience, and from the experiences of acquaintances, in their writings. This book, in an odd way, is similar. The author apparently writes the story with (as far as he knows) all of the main action recounted accurately, but he revised personal characteristics in order to conceal identities. As a result, the book is a history with novelistic elements, as opposed to a novel with historical elements.

I found the main premise of the book to be believable, however. While there's some doubt that Israel killed off as many people as this book says they did, in the fashion recounted here, the whole thing sounds plausible to me. The idea that they would have initial success and ultimately unravel is completely believable, and the premise that there were other teams, who eventually assasinated other PLO functionaries, is completely believeable. The anecdotes involving the main character negotiating with his bosses in a somewhat adversarial relationship sounds very convincing, while at the same time not being exactly what you'd expect in a professional intelligence agency. While unconfirmed, the whole story sounds credible, and that may be the best argument that it happened: at this point corroboration seems less likely, though I suppose that the Israelis could have a change of heart and come out and admit that what is recounted in the book actually happened. The end of the book makes it clear this is unlikely, though.

All in all, a good book, interesting, intelligently written, and confronting one of the great dillemmas of our time: what do you do when terrorists target innocent civilians and kill them? The author quotes Ghandhi as saying that an eye for an eye leads to a world of blind people. One might respond that no eye for an eye leads to a world of righteous blind people, and sighted victimizers. Very very interesting book.

Compelling and tragic

Glad it's being re-printed. I read the hard-cover original book about 7-8 months ago, and it was an enthralling, yet disturbing and ultimately very sad story -- a book I didn't want to put down. Being re-released due to Spielberg's movie "Munich" - try to read the book first.

While presenting the intrigue and excitement of a good espionage thriller, it simultaneously chronicles the growing personal and ethical conflicts of the young Israeli Mossad agent chosen to lead a Kidon squad sent to hunt down and assassinate the Black September terrorist masterminds behind the 1972 Munich Olympics murders of 11 Israeli athletes.

In hindsight, and by comparison with other,later semi-official accounts, there are some careful but obvious fabrications to protect the way Mossad actually operated in Europe - but the bulk of the story appears to be pretty accurate, and you will easily recognize the real episodes that emerged in fictionalized form in novels by Daniel Silva, Steven Hartov, and others.

There is an abstractness and detached matter-of-factness about "Vengeance" that I suspect reflects the lead character's subsequent emotional dissociation - but that aloof coolness permeates the whole enterprise. The assassin 'officially' can not be an agent of Israel or Mossad and thus is immediately isolated from his support system and from any idealistic moral compass that persuaded him to take the job. We watch his dawning cynicism, grief, and guilt - but not remorse - as he realizes how equally expendable he is to his handlers, and in the end, he and his team are as hunted as their targets had been.

The book sticks with you afterwards -- I have found myself wondering how the lead character in this story has fared over the years - I hope he found some degree of safety and peace.
