Vegan Sweets

About thirty years ago I was introduced to vegan cooking and dietary habits. While it has never been something I've ever fully achieved - I had five years as a vegetarian - it is something I continue to enjoy. The recent studies and research suggest that adopting this as part of our lifestyle improves all aspects of our health. I have no idea about that. All I know is that whole foods are more satisfying. This cookbook offers some surprising recipes, such as the Macadamia Coconut Nut Brittle (you had me a Macadamia) and the Vegan White Chocolate Matcha Bonbon. I've not gotten to try the Rose Water Cupcakes, but they are on the to do list. This book includes recipes that utilize raw almonds to make a flour alterative and uses a number of different fruits and nuts that are very tasty. I cannot attest to the calorie load on some of these recipes. But I can say that what we've managed to make have been very tasty.

Good vegan cookbook!

These recipes look really good! Full disclosure, I haven't made any of them yet, but they inspired me to get going. I expected more along the lines of sub applesauce for butter type recipes, but these nearly all call for ground nuts and fruits as the crusts and such, but a lot call for coconut oil as the fat instead. Only one word of warning: you'll need a food processor for most of these, but probably most vegans already have that. I know my life improved when I got mine!

Solid info - needs updated revision

I'm a newbie to the field of Public Health. I wanted a textbook that'd provide a solid overview of the field. It provides that but because the book was published in 2001, it leaves out the significant impact 9/11 must have had on the field of public health, including bioterrorism, public health preparedness & public health informatics. For my purposes (psych background considering grad education in public health), I think it's okay. Couple of complaints... I wish the book had more graphics, illustrations. Also - the writing is as dry & boring as they come! Sure to cure chronic insomnia in a snap! Just because it's research doesn't mean it has to be boring. Apparently these guys don't konw that.

theory not clear

I was expecting more for a textbook that costs so much. The theory presented in the book wasn't very clear or very detailed. In our class, I ended up learning more from a free CDC PDF file that was more clear. We hardly used the textbook in our class- outside materials were more clear.

Splines are more than you thought

This is a very nice book about splines for all who needs interpolation of data and are getting a bit nervous about the somewhat improper behaviour of normal cubic splines, i.e., the ones you learned about in your undergrad exam. The author provides both illustrative examles with computer codes (in FORTRAN) and describes the necessary theoretical background. Compared with many other books, it is readable also for a non-mathematician, although some experience with numerical analysis will be most helpful.

This is absolutely the most excellent book on the subject ever written. It is rigorous, accessible to those who are not professional mathematicians, and full of examples. Using de Boor's public domain software is a cinch, but you need to read the book to fully understand how to do it properly. I really wonder how I got along without it all these years.

About the Author
Lawrence O. Koch is a jazz musician and music critic. He has written over 100 compositions, including several for symphony orchestra and jazz ensemble, and is the recipient of the Schuylkill Lifetime Achievement Award for the Field of Jazz. A former faculty member at Moravian College, he currently heads his own music institution, the Braun School, in Pottsville, Pennsylvania.

The definitive work on Charlie Parker's music

I first encountered this book in the library and ended up checking it out at least 5 times before finally ordering myself a copy. There are biographies as well as musical analyses of Charlie Parker's music that don't really touch on the other area very much. This book attempts to do both and succeeds brilliantly. A lot of the academic jazz writing that I have read about Parker is very dense and far too technical or consists simply of transcriptions without much explanation of WHY Parker played the way he did or how his style evolved over the years. What makes this book so definitive for me is the focus that the author places on WHY Parker played the way he did and HOW he developed as a musician, this anachronistic approach allows him to effectively summarize in ways that pages of sheet music don't. If you want to learn to play Charlie Parker, this is the best book on the subject.
